Job Description

Part‑time substitute custodian position to fill in for custodians.

Provide support to designated campuses, maintain an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for students, staff and public at district facilities; arrange equipment and furniture for meetings and events; and minimize property damage, loss and liability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Arrange furniture and equipment for meetings, classroom activities and special events.
  • Clean assigned school properties and facilities (classrooms, offices, restrooms, corridors, carpets, graffiti removal, windows, walls, bleachers, stage, locker rooms, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
  • Clean facilities after extracurricular activities or athletic events.
  • Distribute supplies and equipment (fill soap dispensers, towel/toilet paper dispensers, packages, furniture, TV/VCR carts, etc.) to appropriate parties.
  • Inspect school or district facilities to ensure safe operations and identify necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment (cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) to ensure availability of items required to properly stock facilities.
  • Prepare facilities for daily operations, extracurricular activities and athletic events (e.g., raising flags, opening gates, sweeping, shoveling, removing snow and sand walks, building access doors).
  • Report immediate safety concerns (facility damage, injury, illness, unauthorized persons, alarms, etc.) and take appropriate action.
  • Assume responsibility for building security (locking doors, turning off lights, taking down flags, etc.) to minimize property damage and potential liability.
  • Perform emergency minor repair and cleaning as necessary.
  • Wear protective wear as directed when cleaning up body fluids.
  • Use all chemicals exactly as directed by container labels.
  • Work cooperatively with colleagues, supervisors, and administrators.
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior.
  • Follow district policies, administrative rules and regulations.
  • Maintain behavior appropriate to performing and accomplishing assigned duties.
  • Project overall concern for personal appearance as it relates to job performance.
  • Carry out assignments and instructions from supervisor(s) in a competent and efficient manner.
  • Maintain exterior of buildings and grounds to keep them free of trash and debris.
  • Water and care for lawn areas as directed.
  • Report electrical and mechanical problems to the maintenance office.
  • Perform manual physical labor, lifting and moving materials, furniture, equipment, and supplies.
  • Maintain assigned uniforms, equipment, tools and custodial closets in operable, safe and attractive status.
  • Account for supplies, materials, and equipment as required.
  • Install light bulbs as needed.
  • Complete records and reports as required in a timely manner.
  • Use technology for management (work orders, e‑mail, etc.).
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor, principal, and/or superintendent.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Coordinate janitor helpers (assignments, timesheets, allocation of funds, training) to ensure work is completed efficiently and effectively.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Ability to work with large numbers of co‑workers, students, and staff while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Prefer experience in custodial work or related field.
  • Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Valid driver’s license and car insurance.
Ability To
  • Schedule activities; collate data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment.
  • Be flexible to work with others in a variety of circumstances.
  • Work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods.

Physical Requirements
  • Physical ability to do manual work for 8 hours per day.
  • Standing, driving, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, lifting, climbing ladders.
  • Lifting from floor to mid‑thigh maximum 50 pounds occasionally; from mid‑thigh to shoulder maximum 50 pounds occasionally; from shoulder to overhead 40 pounds occasionally; carrying 50 pounds maximum occasionally.
  • Work overhead, in tight areas, off ladders, at floor level (on knees).
  • Hand/eye coordination, normal range of sight.
  • Ability to move and operate vacuums, buffers, and other custodial equipment.
  • Work safely from ladders; involve at least two people for lifts over 50 pounds when possible.
  • Ability to move furniture; full mobility of fingers/hands.
Safety and Health
  • Wear protective eye wear when assigned yard maintenance (mowing, edging).
  • Read, understand, and observe all precautions and proper methods of use on chemicals, equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Complete all required training.
  • Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions (bloodborne pathogens, body fluids, etc.).
Equipment/Material Handled

Hand tools, equipment chemicals, vacuums, buffers, ladders, platforms, and materials particular to this trade skill.

Work Environment

The work environment varies greatly, ranging from working alone in a building to working in school facilities with large numbers of people. Conditions include outdoor work in extreme heat or cold, and indoor work in comfortable buildings. Flexibility, patience, self‑motivation, and the ability to work under stressful conditions are required. The job involves frequent noise, varying temperatures, and occasional interruptions.
