Job summary

Radford City Public Schools District is seeking a Substitute Custodian to support day-to-day cleaning and maintenance duties in assigned facilities. The position is non-exempt and reports to an assigned administrator under the district's facilities team.

Responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, disinfecting fixtures, cleaning windows, securing buildings, and assisting with daily sanitation and basic repairs.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Training and Experience: High school diploma or GED and some experience in custodial type work.
  • Current driver’s license in the state of Virginia.
  • Clean driving record.

  • Notifies supervisor of major repairs or attention needed; assists with food distribution as needed.

Job Title: Substitute Custodian

Reports to: Assigned Administrator

Type of position: Non-exempt

Salary Schedule: Substitute’s Salary Schedule

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Appropriately maintains a clean and sanitary facility.
  • Sweeps, mops, waxes, vacuums, dusts, sanitizes assigned area(s).
  • Covers for absent custodian in assigned areas as requested by supervisor.
  • On a daily basis, scrubs and disinfects toilets, urinals, toilet doors, sinks, fountains and other fixtures using approved cleaning supplies.
  • Cleans windows on both the inside and outside at least once per year or more often as needed.
  • Empties trash and garbage and replaces liners.
  • Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs such as loose door handles, replacement of ceiling tiles, light bulbs and ballast, oiling locks, changing filters in unit ventilators and oiling motors at least twice per year, etc.
  • Notifies supervisor concerning need for major repairs or attention needed to lighting, heating, ventilation, roof leaks, windows, parking lot, painting, etc.
  • Submits a weekly supply order to the supervisor. Re-orders during the week should be on an emergency basis only.
  • Cleans snow and debris from sidewalks.
  • Maintains the landscaping by mowing lawns on a weekly schedule during the spring and summer as scheduled by the supervisor. Plants and trims shrubbery and flowers as scheduled by supervisor.
  • Follows the schedule set out by the supervisor.
  • Secures the building, checking and locking doors, turning off lights, etc. on the schedule set out by the supervisor. Notifies administrator of equipment that is left on such as computers, smartboards, etc.
  • Works cooperatively with the supervisor, colleagues, and staff. Treats all students in a fair and equitable manner, by building positive relationships filled with trust and respect.
  • Wears safety equipment such as safety glasses, back brace, slip resistant shoes, etc. when assignment requires such as safety glasses for mowing and back brace for heavy lifting.
  • Complies with all school and school division policies and regulations, state and federal regulations and laws.
  • Assist with food distribution as needed.
  • Maintain and ensure a daily checklist is completed for sanitation.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Training and Experience

High school diploma or GED and some experience in custodial type work. Current driver’s license in the state of Virginia. Clean driving record.
