Job summary

Brookings School District 5-1 is seeking a dependable Custodian to maintain classrooms, offices, and facility areas in a clean and orderly state. The role involves sweeping, mopping, dusting, restroom cleaning, and basic maintenance tasks to support a safe and functional learning environment.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate attendance reliability, willingness to learn carpentry, electrical, and plumbing basics, and the ability to work with diverse individuals.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required or preferred.
  • Prior custodial experience preferred or related experiences.
  • Interest in learning basic maintenance skills in carpentry, electrical and plumbing.
  • Must have good communication and reliability in attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors.
  • Dusting, polishing furniture and woodwork; clean restrooms.
  • Maintain classrooms, offices and facilities in a clean, orderly state.
  • Assist with moving furniture and setting up spaces for events.
  • Basic electrical, plumbing, and carpentry tasks as needed.
  • Ensure safety and remove hazards for students, staff, and visitors.
  • Maintain grounds, including trash pickup and snow removal.

PRIMARY FUNCTION

To maintain assigned classrooms, office spaces, and other facility areas in a clean, orderly manner and in state of good repair.

REPORTS TO

Head Custodian and Building Principal

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors.
  • Refinish floors as required Stripping, Waxing etc.
  • Dusting, polishing furniture and other woodwork.
  • Clean, sand, refinish and adjust and fix desks and other furniture.
  • Empty and clean waste receptacles.
  • Clean restrooms.
  • Wash windows and walls.
  • Clean and Polishing metal surfaces.
  • Maintenance and non-technical repair of equipment.
  • Assist with moving, arranging furniture and equipment.
  • Set up auditoriums, gyms and classrooms for special meetings or events.
  • Basic electrical maintenance: change fixtures, replace light bulbs and outlet covers.
  • Painting as required.
  • Basic plumbing as required.
  • Basic carpentry as required.
  • Cleans and maintains building and grounds.
  • Assists with food services employees in cleaning kitchens and eating areas and unloading commodities.
  • Sees that all hazards to the safety of the students, teachers, and visitors are removed and/or repaired.
  • Sees that broken or weakened chairs, desks, tables, or other equipment are repaired and/or removed from active service until repair or replacement is completed.
  • Maintains grounds, including picking up trash, snow removal and assists with athletic field/track responsibilities (marking).
  • Additional duties that may be required or assigned.
  • Mandatory attendance on dates substitutes choose to take jobs/work
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

The board shall offer a letter of agreement with wages and benefits to be determined as delineated in the classified employee handbook subject to the approval of the superintendent or his/her designee and the school board. Hours and time schedules to be determined by the business manager with the approval of the superintendent.
