Job description

Looking for a flexible, part-time opportunity to make a difference in your community? The Town of Windsor is seeking a dependable and safety-minded Backup Crossing Guard to help students travel safely to and from school.

This part-time, as-needed position provides backup coverage for regularly scheduled crossing guards.

Crossing Guards play an important role in our community by preparing designated school crossing areas, monitoring traffic conditions, and helping students and families cross streets safely.

HIRING RANGE:$22.00/hour, non-exempt

WORK SCHEDULE

Monday through Friday while school is in session, hours may vary

NATURE OF WORK

As a member of the Community Services Team, Individuals in this position prepare crossing zones and assist children in crossing streets safely on a regular basis while children attend school.

Individuals in the position are required to perform work in a manner consistent with and exemplary of the town’s PRIDE philosophy and the town’s Equal Opportunity Employment policy.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Individuals work under the direct supervision of the Community Services Supervisor to carry out assigned duties.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

No supervisory responsibilities or control exercised.

The Individual in the Crossing Guard role is assigned to a specific work location(s) and provided with specific job duties, scope, authority, and responsibility. Individuals in this position must be able to successfully perform, be responsible for, and/or assist in the fulfillment of the job functions and duties listed below with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Applies appropriate knowledge of traffic laws and uses clear and proper traffic management signals to both pedestrians and vehicular traffic to safely cross any person within the designated school crossing zones.
  • Communicates with the Community Services Supervisor to report any information, problems, or concerns regarding the school zone where crossing guard services are performed.
  • Adheres to program policies, procedures and safe work practices.
  • Acts as a professional representative of the Town of Windsor with students, parents, faculty, staff, and community members in the affiliated assigned school and neighborhood.
  • Performs work safely, reports safety concerns to management and supports safe work practices.
OTHER DUTIES
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned that are within the scope of the essential job functions of this assignment.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND FORMAL TRAINING
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES
  • Must have a current Colorado Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one upon hire, that meets the Town of Windsor’s standards.
  • CPR/1st Aid certification within three (3) months of employment
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Ability to communicate effectively when motivating pedestrians through assigned crosswalks.
  • Ability to deal tactfully, but firmly with pedestrians when enforcing traffic control.
  • Ability to handle conflict and confrontation calmly and reasonably.
  • Ability to hold a stop sign in such a manner to be visible to approaching vehicles.
  • Ability to perform required duties and responsibilities in extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and react quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position without direct supervision.
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position in a safe manner.

Materials and equipment used include, but may not be limited to the following:

  1. Equipment: Position requires use of a variety of equipment: portable stop sign, traffic control cones, and computers for email and timesheet communication.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical activities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.

The physical requirements of this position are considered Light Work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.

The worker is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned or to make general observations of facilities or structures.

Work is performed primarily outdoors in field settings. Employees may be subject to outdoor environmental conditions and little to no effective protection from the weather. Employees may be exposed to varying and potentially inclement weather conditions, including rain, snow, wind, cold, extreme heat, and other seasonal conditions. Work may also involve exposure to traffic, moving vehicles, noise, fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, and other atmospheric conditions that may affect the respiratory system or skin. The employee is subject to hazards associated with working in and around active roadways and exposure to uneven, wet, icy, slippery, or otherwise changing surfaces and roadway conditions.

This position is considered safety-sensitive because the individual is responsible for their safety as well as the safety of others. Performing these job functions under the influence of drugs or alcohol would pose significant dangers.
