Job Description

This is a temporary/as needed position.

MUST BE AGE 21 OR OLDER.

General Description:

The position is responsible for operating and transporting school-aged children and other authorized personnel safely and efficiently to and from schools and special events in school division cars/SUVs.

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct a daily pre-trip safety inspection of the vehicle prior to transporting children.
  • Report operating and equipment deficiencies.
  • Report unsafe vehicle conditions.
  • Complete required forms and reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Obey all traffic laws and observe mandatory safety regulations for vehicle operations; adhere and comply with safety rules, motoring regulations and laws.
  • Maintain an assigned schedule and release students only at authorized stops.
  • Transport only authorized students.
  • Follow designated route schedule.
  • Ensure passenger safety; maintain discipline in the vehicle.
  • Notify proper authorities in case of vehicle breakdown or deviation in schedule.
  • Report all accidents immediately, requesting police or ambulance service as needed; complete required accident reports.

Performance and Knowledge Requirements:

Possess a good knowledge of the procedures and federal/state laws governing the safe operation of a vehicle, prior to the completion of the school division’s training program.

General knowledge of the problems involved in operating a vehicle

General knowledge of the geography of the region and the location of streets

Skill in the safe operation of a vehicle; ability to operate the vehicle safely over an assigned route according to a definite time schedule which may require driving during pre-daylight and dusk periods

Ability to detect malfunctioning equipment

Ability to assist children using patience and understanding

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, students, and other community members.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Possession of a valid Virginia Driver’s License
  • Good driving record (< 5 points)
  • Yearly physical examination as required by the Code of Virginia and regulations of the Board of Education
  • Ability to pass a background check and pre-employment drug screening.
Salary
  • Minimum of $30.30 for morning or afternoon trip up to 2 hours; $15.15 for each additional hour
  • Minimum of $60.60 for performing morning and afternoon trips up to 4 hours total; $15.15 for each additional hour
