Job description

Substitute Bus Drivers – Special Education

This is a part‑time, as needed position that does not include benefits.

Opportunity to earn a $500 supplement by obtaining or renewing your commercial driver’s license per BTCS guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma preferred.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license issued by the State Department of Safety with appropriate endorsements for the position.
  • Valid operator’s license with at least five years of unrestricted driving experience.
  • Submit a physical examination to the transportation coordinator upon employment, using the form supplied by the State Commissioner of Education. Examinations are required annually.
  • Substitute drivers must meet all qualifications and requirements for regular drivers.
  • Other qualifications may be determined by the Board as appropriate and acceptable.
Reports To

Transportation & Attendance Director

Job Goal

To provide safe and efficient transportation services for designated groups of students to and from their assigned schools or other authorized points.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Operate the vehicle safely and obey all state and local traffic regulations.
  • When not operating the vehicle, assist students and help maintain student safety.
  • Maintain a neat appearance, be courteous to parents and children, and cooperate with teachers and school officials.
  • Participate in required state‑sponsored safety classes to maintain appropriate certifications.
  • Wear a seat belt at all times when provided.
  • Remain on the bus while students are on the bus, including during loading and unloading.
  • Promote safety habits with the group of students being transported.
  • Report any misconduct of students to the principal of the school to which the student belongs.
  • Transport only authorized students and disembark them only at authorized stops.
  • Report all accidents to the proper law‑enforcement agency and complete any required reports.
  • Refrain from using profanity or tobacco in any form while children are being transported.
  • Refrain from being under the influence of any intoxicating drink or drug while operating a school vehicle.
  • Maintain a neat and clean vehicle.
  • Meet with the director of transportation annually or as necessary to receive student assignments.
  • Complete daily routes in a timely manner.
  • Notify the director of transportation in the event of an absence and locate a qualified substitute if possible.
  • Arrange for routine maintenance of the vehicle with the school district mechanic.
  • Maintain adequate fuel in the vehicle to complete all daily runs. (Fuel will not be purchased while students are in the vehicle.)
  • Perform other duties as reasonably prescribed by the Transportation & Attendance Director, Student Services Supervisor, or Director of Schools.

  • Color Discrimination: Ability to perceive or recognize similarities or differences in colors or shades or other values of the same color.
