Substitute Bus Driver

Purpose

The job of Substitute Bus Driver is to provide safe and efficient transportation of students as they participate in the District's regular and extracurricular programs.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Job-related experience is desired.
  • Exemplary driving record with no more than 8 points in the past 24 months or repeated violations in the past 10 years. Proof of driving record (one year minimum) must be obtained from Arizona Motor Vehicle Division (AZ MVD) annually.
  • Must possess and maintain an Arizona Class B Driver’s License (CDL) with P and S endorsements and AZDOT certificate.
  • Must work on an hourly pay schedule.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Ability to maintain confidential materials and information.
  • Must be able to work in extreme desert temperatures.
  • Must be able to pass an AZDOT physical exam, drug screen and alcohol test.
  • Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Capable of lifting 50 lbs. and passing Department of Public Safety (DPS) physical performance test.
  • Must be able to obtain a DPS Identity Verified Print (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with students, co-workers, administrative staff, and parents.

Responsibilities

  • Transport students to and from school and other activities in a district vehicle over scheduled routes in a safe and timely manner.
  • Ensure and maintain a safe environment for students during transport, loading and unloading, report student misconduct according to established directions.
  • Observe all mandatory safety regulations for compliance with the established rules and laws as outlined by DPS and Arizona Traffic Laws.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure the safe operating condition of the vehicle and compliance with mandated guidelines.
  • Report all necessary preventive maintenance on District Vehicle Repair Form to Dispatch or as directed.
  • Prepare and submit required record information on appropriate forms in a timely manner (e.g., mileage, discipline, accident, referrals, reports, etc.).
  • Communicate and receive direction with dispatchers.
  • Drive all bus types safely.
  • Meet or exceed the dress code.
  • Perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade changing job conditions.
  • Perform basic math.
  • Read and follow instructions; understand written and oral instructions.
  • Apply safety practices and procedures.
  • Attend department in-service meetings and all recertification classes.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Skills: Prioritize and maintain vehicles and equipment to provide safe operations; compose and maintain basic original documents including reports and correspondence; follow directions and meet standards; comprehend reference books and manuals; operate assigned tools and equipment with reasonable knowledge; interpret and apply applicable laws, codes, regulations, and standards.

Knowledge: Basic math, read, follow instructions, understand written and oral instructions; rules and regulations of driving a school vehicle; standard practices, methods, and materials of assigned work; occupational hazards and applicable safety principles; safe use and properties of supplies and equipment; reading routes, maps, and schedules; applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, regulations; customer service principles; generalized office technology and software applications; communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability: Schedule student drop-offs and pick-ups, gather and/or collate data, consider a number of factors when using equipment; work with a variety of circumstances and data; operate equipment using standardized methods; work with a diverse group of individuals; problem solve to identify issues and select action plans; maintain confidentiality; establish and maintain effective working relationships; communicate with diverse groups; work with detailed information and frequent interruptions; adapt to changing priorities.

Responsibility

Work independently under direct supervision using standardized procedures; provide information and/or advise others; operate within a defined budget; utilize resources from other work units as required; continuous opportunity to affect the organization’s services.

Working Environment

Physical demands include sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions. Manual work requires lifting/moving up to 50 lbs., dragging up to 125 lbs., and assisting wheelchairs and students. Requires 70% sitting, 15% walking, 15% standing. Conditions may include extreme weather and hazardous conditions.

Evaluation: This position will be evaluated annually as outlined in Governing Board Policy.
