Job summary

Pelham City Board of Education seeks a Substitute Bus Driver to cover routes as needed. You will operate a school bus, follow schedules, and ensure student safety during transport.

Job Description

Job Title: Substitute Bus Driver

Minimum Qualifications
  • 1. Meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457. (Must pass background screening)
  • 2. Must have the physical strength, agility, dexterity, acuity, and mobility to perform jobresponsibilities.
  • 3. Must have the ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships
  • 4. High school graduate or equivalent (GED) and academic competency in basic skills (*may bewaived by the superintendent)
  • 5. Valid Alabama (Class B or above) Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a passenger andschool bus endorsement.
  • 6. Such alternatives to the qualifications listed above or below as the Pelham Board of Educationmay find appropriate and acceptable
Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • 1. Observe all traffic laws, safety regulations, policies, and procedures regarding school buses inaccordance with Federal, State, and local government agencies, and the policies of the PelhamBoard of Education.
  • 2. Demonstrates the ability to work with school-age children.
  • 3. Keep a professional appearance and perform duties in a manner that will promote good publicrelations.
  • 4. Ability to remain both drug and alcohol free in the workplace and be subject to random drug andalcohol testing according to PBOE policy.
  • 5. Be regular and punctual in attendance and let the supervisor know who you are subbing for daily.
  • 6. Maintain appropriate student management and report student incidents to the appropriatesupervisors.
  • 7. Cooperate with the principal, Transportation Coordinator, and parents to solve disciplineproblems.
  • 8. Conduct bus evacuation drills in accordance with approved procedure if you are subbing duringevacuation drills.
  • 9. Transport authorized passengers only, follow the assigned time schedule, and route.
  • 10. Discharge students at authorized stops only.
  • 11. Keeps assigned bus clean by daily sweeping.
  • 12. Maintains effective communication with supervisors in case of emergency.
  • 13. Maintains the ability to be contacted during school hours in case of unexpected emergencysituations where students require transportation on the days you are subbing.
  • 14. Check the bus before and after each operation for mechanical defects, unattended students, andany items left on the bus.
  • 15. Notify proper authority in case of mechanical failure and/or late arrival.
  • 16. Keep bus properly fueled at all times.
  • 17. Report all accidents, vehicle damage, and student injuries immediately should they occur.
  • 18. Complete and submit all required reports and documentation in a timely manner.
  • 19. Maintains and implements the established rules and procedures for transportation.
  • 20. Attend meetings, training, and in-service presentations related to job functions, includingpresentations regarding behavior management, crisis management strategies, and emergencyprocedures. Have the ability to complete evacuation drills if necessary.
  • 21. Carry out all responsibilities at all assigned locations.
  • 22. Be regular and punctual in attendance
  • 23. Adhere to all Board policies, school system rules, school system administrative procedures, andfederal, state, and local laws.
  • 24. Clock in and out daily; also, report the driver you are covering as a sub-driver do this inaccordance with Board policies, school system rules, school system administrative procedures,and applicable law.
  • 25. Maintain proper and professional relationships with students, school system employees, andschool visitors.
  • 26. Perform assigned job duties while filling in. In a courteous and professional manner.
  • 27. Properly care for equipment and material resources of the school system.
  • 28. Maintain confidentiality regarding school and/or workplace matters in accordance with federaland state law.
  • 29. Perform other job-related duties assigned by the Superintendent and/or supervisor(s).
