Job summary

Muscatine Community School District is seeking a Substitute Bus Driver to provide safe, reliable transportation for students to and from school and activities from the Transportation Center.

The position reports to the Transportation Supervisor and requires a valid Type B Commercial Driver’s License with endorsements, a state permit, and DOT requirements, along with a High School Diploma or GED. Physical demands apply.

MUSCATINE COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT

JOB REQUIREMENTS ANALYSIS

POSITION TITLE: Substitute Bus Driver

REPORTS TO: Transportation Supervisor

SUPERVISES: Students

CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Certification requirements are per State and Federal DOT requirements plus any additional training required by Muscatine School District for regular education route drivers, CDL, bus permit, valid physical.

OBJECTIVE:

To provide students with safe and efficient transportation to and from school, including related activities.

MAJOR DUTIES:
  • Provide safe & orderly transportation for students to and from school and activities
  • Evacuation of School Bus in case of emergency
  • Complete safety pre-check of assigned equipment
  • Accurate completion of all required reports
  • Communicate safety concerns with appropriate personnel
  • Operate two-way radio
  • Attend required State and District Safety classes and meetings
  • Other duties of a similar nature to be assigned as needed

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Physical and chauffeurs license and state permit. Computer skills useful for maintaining routing and student database computer systems. High School Diploma or GED.

  • Ability to pass DOT physical and obtain Medical Certificate
  • Driving record satisfactory to the District and the District’s carrier
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check
  • Familiarity of accident procedures
  • Physically able to operate any equipment assigned to meet needs
  • Able to meet the physical demands of the position:standing,walking, lifting, climbing
  • Able to physically evacuate students in case of emergency (may involve lifting or carrying students)
  • Good oral and written skills
  • Ability to perform job tasks with minimum supervision
  • Ability to adjust work hours to meet the needs of the Department and the District
  • Ability to solve problems effectively
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, colleagues, community members, staff and students
  • Excellent communication skills both orally and written
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies

The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds 0 to 12 feet and occasionally up to 20 feet, such as curriculum materials, desks, chairs, and boxes. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables and carts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus while supervising students and working with computers, written materials, reports, assessment data, etc.

Substitute may be required to lift and move 75 lbs up to 50 feet. Substitute may be required to reposition equipment such as wheelchair with a 160 lb. load.

The job may require exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally.
