Job Description

Major Function

Skilled work in operating light and heavy school buses to transport students on scheduled routes and trips, supporting district activities within and outside district boundaries. The position requires safe operation of buses in all weather conditions, including fog, rain, sleet, and snow.

Illustrative Duties
  • Transport students to and from school on preplanned routes and schedules.
  • Maintain effective relationships with students, parents, staff, and the public.
  • Complete required bus driver training programs.
  • Regulate bus heating and ventilation for passenger comfort.
  • Drive safely and in compliance with traffic laws, including activating stop signs and flashing lights when stopping.
  • Ensure the safety of students during loading, unloading, and transportation.
  • Instruct students on safety precautions and practices.
  • Maintain discipline and report unruly behavior.
  • Report delays and accidents promptly.
  • Keep accurate operational records, including mileage, fuel logs, and student records.
  • Report vehicle defects and ensure regular maintenance.
  • Assist students with disabilities, including wheelchair maneuvering and safety procedures.
  • Conduct daily bus inspections and prepare the bus for each route and after each trip.
  • Participate in drug testing and report any changes to driving records.
  • Clean the bus interior and exterior as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
