Job summary

Accomack County Public Schools is seeking a Substitute Bus Aide to assist with the safe loading, unloading, and transportation of students with disabilities to and from school. The role requires operating wheelchair lifts, securing riders, and maintaining discipline per division regulations.

The position is part-time, non-exempt, with a daily rate of pay. Immediate start is possible, and duties include supporting emergency drills, rider instruction, and collaboration with the transportation

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Meets state physical examination requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Operates the hydraulic lift equipment on a bus for loading/unloading students in wheelchairs.
  • Secures each student using harnesses, seat belts, wheelchair locks, or safety equipment.
  • Maintains discipline in accordance with division regulations.
  • Assists with emergency evacuation drills as required.
  • Instructs riders on responsible passenger behavior.
  • Reports absences promptly to enable a substitute aide to be secured.
  • Learns the physical and emotional needs of each student on the bus.
  • Remains alert and exercises good judgment during emergencies, vehicle issues, and special requests from riders' parents.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

The position is responsible for assisting with ensuring the safe loading, unloading, and transportation of students with disabilities to and from school.

Essential Duties

  • Operates the hydraulic lift equipment on a bus for the purpose of loading and unloading students in wheelchairs.
  • Secures each student in the appropriate location utilizing either harnesses, seat belts, wheelchair locks, or other safety equipment.
  • Maintains discipline in accordance with division regulations.
  • Assists with emergency evacuation drills in accordance with division regulations.
  • Instructs riders on responsible passenger behavior.
  • Reports absences promptly to enable the supervisor to secure a substitute aide.
  • Learns the physical and emotional needs of each student on the bus.
  • Remains alert and exercises good judgment during emergencies, vehicle issues, and when addressing special requests from riders' parents.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Meets state physical examination requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to deal with exuberant behavioral characteristics of riders.
  • Ability to lift and/or carry children as required.
  • Knowledge of first aid techniques and the ability to administer when necessary.
  • Ability to recognize problems and act quickly to solve them.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, enter data into a computer, and operate equipment; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person, outdoors, and on the telephone physical agility to lift to 100 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

Duties are usually performed on a school bus or in a school environment. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
