Job summary

Duke Energy is hiring a Substation Technician Learner to support higher-level technicians in substation construction and maintenance. The role focuses on developing intermediate skills, increasing independence, and possibly leading small projects under supervision.

The position emphasizes safety, regulatory compliance, and technical growth through hands-on experience with protective circuits, testing, and equipment installation.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma/GED required for Learner position.
  • Candidate for Technician I typically possesses a qualifying high school credential.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate a complete understanding of company safety rules and work practices.
  • Demonstrate a complete understanding of Human Performance practices.
  • Exhibits the capacity to safely lead small jobs and work independent of direct leadership.
  • Complete understanding of the processes needed to organize construction and maintenance work and create overall implementation/maintenance plans.
  • Total understanding of reading prints and determine how to isolate protection circuits safely.
  • Total understanding of the processes needed to organize substation work activities.
  • Total understanding of operating bucket, digger derrick truck, and other areal devices.
  • Ability to respond to all call outs.
  • Experience leading complex maintenance or construction projects.
  • Total understanding of testing related to power factor, winding resistance, circuit breaker timing, and leakage reactance.
  • Total understanding of installation of portable/mobile substations/transformers or other temporary equipment.
  • Total understanding of infrared scanning substation equipment.
  • Total understanding of AC and DC circuit principles.
  • Total understanding of regulatory compliance and accurate data/documentation.
