Job summary

The City of Garland is seeking a Substation Technician to be responsible for maintaining, constructing, and retrofitting electric substation equipment. This role involves working with high voltage equipment, including circuit breakers and transformers, and conducting general maintenance and repairs.

Candidates must have a High School Diploma, relevant experience, and a valid Texas Class C Driver’s License. The position requires occasional travel and supports 24-hour operations.

Qualifications

• Up to two years of relevant experience.
• Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License.
• Valid Texas Class A CDL or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
• Certified Crane Operator or ability to obtain within 2 years of hire.
• Ability to complete the Garland Power & Light Apprentice Substation Technician Program.

Responsibilities

• Work around energized high voltage substation and transmission equipment up to and including 345KV.
• Install, maintain, and repair breakers and transformers.
• Conduct general substation maintenance and repairs.
• Perform infrared testing and interpret equipment readings.
• Construct new substations and modify existing ones as needed.

Summary: Responsible for maintaining, constructing, and retrofitting electric substation equipment, including circuit breakers, transformers, switches, battery systems, tap changers, cooling systems, lighting arresters, and other equipment. Duties also include installation of concrete foundations, support steel structures, station insulators, ground grids, and bus. Pay Range: (Depending on qualifications and experience)

Responsibilities

• Work around energized high voltage substation and transmission equipment up to and including 345KV.
• Install, maintain, and repair breakers and transformers.
• Perform switch and clearance orders as instructed by dispatch.
• Conduct general substation maintenance and repairs.
• Perform infrared testing and interpret equipment readings.
• Conduct monthly inspections on transformers, breakers, relays, batteries, generators and other equipment.
• Construct new substations and modify existing ones as needed.
• Pull and terminate control wiring in control houses and substation equipment.
• Support 24‑hour operations by assisting with standby and callout duties outside of regular work hours.
• Occasional travel to remote system facilities with overnight stays.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma.

• Valid Texas Class A CDL or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
• Certified Crane Operator or ability to obtain within 2 years of hire.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

Work is conducted in energized substations, switchyards, and generating plants. Majority of work is performed outdoors with frequent exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.
