Job summary

HDR is seeking a Substation Team Lead in Spokane, WA. You will be responsible for establishing Power Delivery relationships with local clients, overseeing project execution, leading a team of engineers and designers, and driving quality and profitability.

This role requires strong technical leadership and a commitment to HDR's employee-owned culture. You will manage workload, budget, and schedules, collaborate with regional teams, support business development, and ensure compliance with HDR QMS.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Establish Power Delivery relationships with local key clients and oversee project execution.
• Provide technical leadership, drive quality and profitability, and guide design teams.
• Supervise and grow a local substation team; manage workload, quality, utilization, training, and annual reviews.
• Apply project management tools: goals, contracts, WBS, scope, schedule, budget, earned value, closeout.
• Collaborate with regional and national teams; balance staffing and morale.
• Develop relationships with technical peers for work-sharing opportunities.
• Coordinate with marketing and leadership for business development.
• Ensure HDR Quality Management Systems (QMS) compliance.
• Oversee non-engineering project components like public involvement and environmental permitting.
• Mentor Project Engineers and junior staff; perform client management and technical support.
• Support marketing and proposal development for new opportunities.
• Travel for business development and execution may be required.
• Perform other duties as needed.

In the role of Substation Team Lead, we'll count on you to:

• Be responsible for establishing the Power Delivery relationship with one or more local, key clients. This includes overseeing project execution, driving quality and delivery for that client, technical leadership, marketing new opportunities, and profitability to achieve business objectives.
• Supervise and continue to grow a local substation team of engineers and designers and provide oversight over workload, quality, utilization, team morale, training, and performing annual performance reviews of team members.
• Understand basic project management tools and techniques including client goals and objectives, contract types and project risk, work breakdown structures, project scope, schedule, and budget, financial management and controls, including earned value, and project closeout.
• Collaborate with substation team members across the region and nationally and balance staff workload, quality, utilization, team morale, and training.
• Establish a network of relationships with technical peers in other offices and leverage those relationships and resources in work‑sharing opportunities.
• Coordinate with marketing and technical leadership for business development.
• Must thoroughly understand and implement the HDR Quality Management Systems (QMS) requirements, processes, and procedures.
• May also be responsible for overseeing non‑engineering components of projects, including public involvement, environmental permitting, right of way acquisition, construction management, and other services.
• Works independently and may direct, mentor, train, and/or supervise one or more Project Engineers, Engineers in Training, and/or junior design staff.
• Perform client management, project management and/or technical support activities.
• Represent HDR to support marketing and proposal development for new opportunities.
• Some travel for business development and execution may be required.
• Perform other duties as needed

Preferred Qualifications

• Project Management Professional (PMP) or ability to obtain is desired.
• Familiar with Primavera or SureTrak software.
• Existing familiarity with Washington based utilities is desired.
• Professional registration (P.E.) license with focus in Power preferred.
• Preference given to professionals with substation physical/outdoor design experience, including developing yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and associated bills of materials.

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full‑time regular positions. Temporary and part‑time roles eligible for limited benefits.) {Spokane, WA}: $101,812 - $145,445 {Bellevue/Seattle, WA.}: $128,604 - $183,720
