Job description

Substation Project Engineer

The Substation Practice is seeking a Project Engineer. This role supports the delivery of substation design work for utility‑scale wind, solar, and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across the United States. On a day‑to‑day basis, this person will contribute to design efforts, produce technical deliverables, and support project teams in executing active substation work.

As part of a collaborative team, you will work closely with senior engineers to develop your technical depth, contribute to project delivery, and build experience across a range of substation projects and clients.

This role is hybrid‑ or remote‑friendly, with a preference for an individual who is based near one of our offices located in Portland, OR; Corvallis, OR; Bend, OR; Bellingham, WA; Seattle, WA; Tacoma, WA; Spokane, WA; Boise, ID; Denver, CO; or Remote.

What You’ll Do
Key Responsibilities
  • Create and oversee substation design deliverables from preliminary through IFC plan sets; deliverables may include but not limited to: one‑line diagrams, schematics, wiring, general arrangements, conduit, grounding, equipment connection details, design criteria, equipment specifications, and construction specifications
  • Perform engineering calculations such as bus sizing, AC/DC station service sizing, cable sizing, grounding, and equipment selection
  • Coordinate with project manager and multidisciplinary project teams to support project execution
  • Assist with preparation of technical studies (short circuit, grounding, arc flash, etc.)
  • Perform QA/QC reviews of junior engineers’ work and incorporate feedback from senior engineers and SMEs
  • Provide support during construction phases, including RFI responses and submittal review
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to entry‑level engineers as they develop substation design skills and project delivery experience
What You Bring
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering
  • 4‑8 years’ experience specifically in substation protection & control, or physical design experience
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary teams
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in utility‑scale renewable energy projects (wind, solar, BESS)
  • Consulting experience preferred
  • Familiarity with substation design tools (e.g., EasyPower, ETAP)
