Job summary

Hydrogen UK Ltd. is seeking a Substation Project Engineer in Pomona, CA. This hybrid role requires 2 days on-site and supports a duration of 18 months on a W2 contract at $32–$37/hr.

You will lead pre-engineering walks, manage design work, coordinate procurement, and mentor other engineers while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance across projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or related technical field.
• 2+ years of experience in substation engineering and design.
• Knowledge of engineering guides, standards, codes and practices.
• Experience conducting field meetings and documenting outcomes.
• Hands-on AutoCAD experience developing/updating engineering drawings.
• Strong organizational, written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Develop preliminary project scopes and lead pre-engineering walks with stakeholders.
• Prepare, review and distribute job walk minutes, design specs and related documents.
• Coordinate procurement of major equipment to support material requirements and delivery schedules.
• Provide technical engineering and design support for in-house projects and mentor team members.
• Manage prime engineering contractors to ensure quality designs, milestones and cost objectives.
• Review and evaluate contractor cost proposals for direct-award and bid projects.
• Approve purchase orders, change orders, and service sheets via Ariba.
• Provide technical support to field personnel and project teams as needed.
• Support safety, compliance and NERC reporting requirements.
• Mentor engineers to develop technical expertise within Substation Projects.
• Promote safety-conscious work environment and adherence to safety protocols.
• Utilize AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Design Manager, Word, Excel and PowerPoint in project activities.

Substation Project Engineer Pomona, CA (Hybrid; 2 days on-site) Duration: initial 18-month contract (W2, not eligible for C2C) Pay: $32-37/hr

Key Responsibilities

• Develop preliminary project scopes and lead pre-engineering job walks with Construction, Maintenance, Operations, IT, Telecommunications, Field Engineering, Testing, and other stakeholders.
• Prepare, review, approve, and distribute job walk meeting minutes, design specifications, and related engineering documentation.
• Coordinate the timely procurement of major equipment to support project material requirements and delivery schedules.
• Provide technical engineering and design support for in-house projects while guiding and training members of the design team.
• Manage prime engineering contractors to ensure high-quality designs, project milestones, cost objectives, and consistent deliverables are met.
• Review and evaluate engineering contractor cost proposals for direct-award and competitively bid projects.
• Review and approve purchase order requests, change orders, and service sheets through Ariba.
• Provide technical support to field personnel, internal stakeholders, external partners, and project teams as needed.
• Support operational and emergent engineering needs related to service reliability, compliance requirements, stakeholder requests, emergencies, and NERC reporting.
• Mentor and train engineers as needed to help develop technical expertise within the Substation Projects group.
• Promote a safety-conscious work environment and ensure adherence to established safety protocols and safe work practices.
• Use AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Design Manager, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to support engineering and project activities.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, or a bachelor’s degree in a scientific, technical, or mathematics-related field.
• 2+ years of experience in substation engineering and design.
• Working knowledge of engineering guides, standards, codes, regulations, and practices applicable to complex assignments.
• Experience conducting field meetings, discussing project scope with stakeholders, and documenting meeting outcomes.
• Hands-on AutoCAD experience developing and updating engineering drawings.
• Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to coordinate effectively with engineering, construction, operations, maintenance, and other cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• 5+ years of engineering experience.
• Experience applying regulations, engineering standards, codes, guides, methods, and practices to complex projects.
• Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in the State of California.
• Experience with electric utility substations ranging from 4kV through 500kV.
