Substation Design Engineer - Senior Level

Job Locations: US-CA-Pasadena

Overview

Responsible for the design of deliverables associated with substation projects supporting one of our largest electric utility clients in Southern California. The substation Protection & Control design deliverables include one-line & three-line diagrams, AC & DC elementary & logic diagrams, front & rear panel elevations and wiring, supervisory & control drawings, electrical vendor equipment wiring diagrams, complete cable schedule and bill of materials. The substation physical design deliverables include general arrangement drawings, electrical equipment plan & elevation drawings, above & below grade conduit & grounding drawings, relay house layout and complete bill of materials. The Senior Substation Engineer will report directly to the Substation Design Manager.

Responsibilities

• Leads substation P&C and/or physical design, including the preparation of field notes, drawings, specifications, and estimates.
• Performs careful QA/QC review activities submitted by junior engineers to ensure a quality product.
• Prepares computer assisted design and construction drawings of a complex nature with neatness and a minimum of errors.
• Performs engineering calculations such as AC and DC load calculations required to properly size auxiliary systems.
• Performs engineering calculations such as conduit and bus sizing, lighting & lightning analysis, and grounding grid analysis.
• Ensures all designs conform to client and industry standards.
• Communicates and coordinates project activities with project manager, client, and others as needed.
• Utilizes client and/or company information system to track and update design activities.
• Attends job site meetings to gather scope of work.
• May provide field support during construction.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET approved college or university.
• 10+ years of experience working in substation design or similar with utility or consulting engineering firm.
• Proficient using Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Excel, Word, and Outlook).
• Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
• Experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred

• Professional Engineer's License in Electrical Engineering preferred but not required.
• Experience with substation design and construction standards for electric utilities in California is highly desirable.

Wage Data Per State Requirements

Salary range for this position is $140,000 - $170,000. The starting salary will be commensurate with skill, education, experience, and working environment.

Physical Demands

• Ability to sit/stand for up to 8 hours per day.
• Ability to move freely for up to 8 hours per day.
