Bright Minds is seeking innovative and dedicated professionals to work on high-impact energy infrastructure projects. We’re hiring a Substation Engineers to support engineering design and project execution for substations ranging from 34.5kV to 500kV.

Based in Houston, TX, Minneapolis, MN, Chicago, IL, and Portland, ME this role offers a competitive salary, full benefits, and a chance to grow within a dynamic, supportive work environment.

Primary Function:

The Substation Engineer performs hands-on engineering work in both physical and protection & control (P&C) substation design. This role requires deep familiarity with high-voltage substation systems, design principles, and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities:

• Create complete design documents and drawings for substations, including wiring diagrams, bills of materials, and as-built updates with minimal supervision
• Perform engineering support tasks such as relay burden, lighting, load flow, and short circuit calculations
• Utilize engineering software for ground grid design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, and power studies
• Ensure project schedules are met and work closely with project engineers to maintain deliverable timelines
• Apply relevant engineering codes and standards (NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE, ANSI)
• Use document management systems effectively to maintain accurate project records
• Supervise or support project activities, including field visits to job sites for training and hands-on learning
• Communicate project updates and coordinate with clients and internal teams
• Proactively identify and address design or project issues

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) from an accredited university
• Minimum of 3 years’ experience in substation engineering design
• Knowledge of substation systems from 34.5kV to 500kV
• Understanding of three-phase power systems, AC/DC fundamentals, per-unit calculations, and symmetrical components
• Familiarity with substation components, relay/metering devices, and their application
• Experience designing electrical schematics, cabling, and control systems
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and take ownership of quality and accuracy in deliverables

Preferred Qualifications:

• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or ability to obtain PE licensure within 1 year of hire
• Experience with relay coordination and advanced P&C design
• Proficiency with industry tools such as AutoCAD, MicroStation, or engineering analysis software
• Prior work on utility, EPC, or large-scale transmission projects
