Job summary

Team Fishel is seeking a Substation Electrician/Technician to perform journeyman-level electrical and mechanical work on HV substation equipment (13kV–230kV+). You’ll install, maintain, test, and repair transformers, breakers, switchgear, and related systems in high-voltage environments under OSHA, NESC, and NERC CIP standards.

You will handle switching operations, LO/TO procedures, and safety briefings, and work with field crews on outages and storm restoration.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED; completion of a 4-year Substation Electrician Apprenticeship or 4+ years journey-level HV experience.
  • Preferred: AS degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related field.
  • Must pass pre-employment assessments and qualify for NERC CIP clearance within 6 months.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect, test, repair, and overhaul HV substation equipment including transformers, breakers, switchgear, and buswork.
  • Perform oil sampling and dielectric fluid filtering on major station apparatus.
  • Maintain and repair pneumatic, hydraulic, and motor-operated controls for breakers and switches.

Job description

PositionDescription:

The Substation Electrician /Technician performs journeyman-level electrical and mechanical work involved inthe installation, preventive maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, andoverhaul of high-voltage electric transmission and distribution substationequipment. Working within high-voltage environments (13kV to 230kV+), thetechnician ensures system reliability and safety in accordance with OSHAstandards, the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), and NERC CIPregulations. This position serves on multi-person field crews, participates inhigh-voltage switching operations, and responds to unplanned system outages andstorm restoration activities.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Duties:
  • A. Inspects, cleans,adjusts, tests, repairs, and overhauls high-voltage power transformers,oil/SF6/vacuum circuit breakers, voltage regulators, tap changers, switchgear,disconnect switches, buswork, and surge arresters.
  • B. Performs oilsampling, processing, and dielectric fluid filtering on major stationapparatus.
  • ·C. Maintains andrepairs pneumatic, hydraulic, and motor-operated mechanism controls associatedwith circuit breakers and switches.
2. Switching Operations & ClearanceProtocols
  • · A. Executes complexhigh-voltage and low-voltage switching procedures under the direction of SystemDispatchers.
  • ·B. Establishes safeworking boundaries using proper lockout/tagout (LOTO), grounding equipment, andsafety tagging protocols.
  • ·C. Leads andparticipates in daily morning safety tailgates, job hazard analyses (JHA), andpre-job briefings.
  • A. Operatesspecialized electrical test equipment to conduct Doble power factor testing,transformer turns ratio (TTR), contact resistance (micro-ohm), insulationresistance (Megger), and sweep frequency response analysis (SFRA).
  • ·B. Utilizes utilityasset management software (e.g., Cascade) and specialized testing software suitesto accurately record, analyze, and track equipment condition data.
4. Station Auxiliary & DC Backup Systems
  • · A. Inspects, tests,and maintains station auxiliary infrastructure, including station batterybanks, battery chargers, DC distribution panels, and emergency standbygenerators.
  • · B. TroubleshootsAC/DC control circuits, station lighting, and auxiliary power supplies.
5. Emergency Response & On-CallRequirements
  • ·A. Participates in anon-call rotation to respond to emergency equipment failures, forced outages,and weather‑related restoration efforts.
  • ·B. Operates heavy utility vehicles, including bucket trucks, crane trucks, and oil processingtrailers, under all weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Education & Experience
  • ·A. High SchoolDiploma or GED equivalent.
  • ·B. Completion of anaccredited 4‑year Substation Electrician Apprenticeship program, OR 4+ years of journey‑level experience in high‑voltage substation maintenance with an electric utility or industrial facility.
  • ·C. Preferred: Associate of Science (A.S.) degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or related discipline.
2. Licensure & Credentials
  • · A. Valid StateDriver's License with a clean driving record.
  • · B. Valid Class ACommercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement (or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire).
  • · C. Ability to passpre-employment technical assessments (e.g., EEi CAST exam).
  • · D. Must qualify for North American Electric Reliability Corporation Critical Infrastructure Protection (NERC CIP) clearance within 6 months.
3. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • ·A. Proficiency inreading single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, electrical schematics, and mechanical blueprints.
