Job summary

LND Technical Services LLC is seeking a Substation Technician / Electrician to perform installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of high-voltage substation equipment across multiple sites in the United States.

You will lead field crews, mentor apprentices, schedule maintenance, and respond to outages, ensuring compliance with safety standards and industry codes.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in Electrical Technology, Power Systems, or a related field (equivalent military, utility, or electrician apprenticeship/journeyman training accepted)
• 3–5 years of hands-on experience in substation electrical maintenance, testing, and commissioning
• Demonstrated experience working with high-voltage (69kV–500kV) systems and industrial apparatus testing equipment

Responsibilities

• Perform electrical installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of substation equipment including transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, voltage regulators, capacitors, reactors, relays, and control systems
• Diagnose and repair complex electrical and mechanical equipment malfunctions, ensuring compliance with electrical codes, safety regulations, and company standards
• Read and interpret electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, control wiring, and manufacturer technical manuals
• Maintain commissioning and maintenance records, test results, and equipment histories in the asset management system
• Lead and oversee substation installation, commissioning, and electrical maintenance crews, enforcing safe work practices and LOTO procedures
• Train and mentor apprentice and journeyman-level electricians in testing procedures, safety standards, and trade best practices
• Respond to substation outages, equipment failures, and electrical system emergencies, including outside of normal working hours

Reports to: Regional Field Service Manager

The Substation Technician / Electrician performs advanced technical and electrical work in the installation, testing, maintenance, and repair of high-voltage substation equipment. This role ensures reliable operation of substations, electrical apparatus, and associated systems through expert diagnostics, preventative maintenance, and physical troubleshooting. This position also provides electrical guidance to apprentice technicians and assists in developing maintenance programs and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform electrical installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of substation equipment including power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, voltage regulators, capacitors, reactors, relays, and associated control systems
• Diagnose and repair complex electrical and mechanical equipment malfunctions, ensuring compliance with electrical codes, safety regulations, and company standards
• Conduct electrical and physical diagnostic tests such as power factor, TTR, Doble, SFRA, insulation resistance, and dissolved gas analysis (DGA)
• Read and interpret electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, control wiring, and manufacturer technical manuals
• Maintain accurate commissioning and maintenance records, test results, and equipment histories in the asset management system
• Lead and oversee substation installation, commissioning, and electrical maintenance crews in daily field operations, ensuring strict adherence to safe work practices and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures
• Collaborate with engineers and system operations to plan equipment outages, commissioning, and energization of new installations
• Assist in the development of electrical maintenance schedules, procedures, and equipment specifications
• Train and mentor apprentice and journeyman-level electricians and technicians in electrical testing procedures, safety standards, and trade best practices
• Respond to substation outages, equipment failures, and electrical system emergencies, including outside of normal working hours

Education & Experience

• Associate degree in Electrical Technology, Power Systems, or a related field (equivalent military, utility, or electrician apprenticeship/journeyman training accepted)
• 3–5 years of hands‑on experience in substation electrical maintenance, testing, and commissioning
• Demonstrated experience working with high‑voltage (69kV–500kV) systems and industrial apparatus testing equipment

Certifications & Licenses

• Journeyman Electrician License, NETA/NICET, or equivalent electrical certification preferred
• OSHA 10/30, First Aid/CPR, and switching & tagging certifications preferred
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required

Knowledge & Skills

• Advanced understanding of substation design, protection systems, and high-voltage electrical equipment operation
• Proficiency with electrical testing equipment and diagnostic software (e.g., Doble, Omicron, Megger)
• Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills with high attention to detail
• Ability to work independently and lead a small crew under minimal supervision
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Physical & Operational Requirements

• Ability to lift up to 70 lbs
• Perform physical electrical labor, including climbing ladders, standing for extended periods, and operating hand/power tools
• Work outdoors in all weather conditions and within confined spaces
• Travel up to 75% nationwide (including regular driving and commercial flights)
• Must be able to work overtime and extended out‑of‑town stays as needed
• Must pass a pre‑employment drug screen, criminal background check, and be legally authorized to work in the U.S
