About the Opportunity
This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Company, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp [FEU].
This is an on-site position, located in either Greensburg, PA or Reading, PA.
The job of Designer requires an individual to have an interest and/or ability to create engineering and standard drawings for the Substation Design Engineering group within FirstEnergy. This position will work within a staff of engineers, designers, survey crews, drafters, and specialists, both internal and external, engaged in a wide variety of engineering design, from the request for project estimation through conceptual and detailed design development, equipment acquisition, construction, and finally record update. This position will provide drawing support to Substation personnel, Real Estate, Project Management, and Construction crews verifying that safety standards are followed and required accuracies are met.
Responsibilities include:
- Creating and revising drawings and documentation for transmission and distribution substation projects from scope documents, protection specifications, engineering sketches and/or verbal instructions.
- Contributing to a safe environment for substation personnel, co-workers, contractors, and the general public.
- Preparing bills-of-material and specifications to procure needed equipment and materials for substation projects.
- Assisting in preparing applications and supporting documentation for engineering permits when necessary.
- Creating or revising substation electrical one-lines, and AC and DC schematics drawings.
- Developing conduit and raceway layouts and cable schedules.
- Assisting in researching and exploring new technologies that will effectively enable work.
- Preparing drafts for purchase requisitions and blanket releases for substation projects.
- Coordinating with technical personnel to gather and record data for substation design projects and complete as-built and record print revisions from marked drawings.
- Supporting and sustaining FirstEnergy as a high performing organization by contributing to excellent organizational performance and values of FirstEnergy through responsible effective work performance.
- Providing assistance during emergencies and storm related activities. Storm response duties may include time out of the office for extended stays.
Qualifications include:
- Associate degree or certification in computer aided drafting (CAD) is required. Consideration will be given to applicants having 2 years of technical and operational experience in lieu of a college degree.
- Minimum of 0-2 years of drafting experience is required.
- Working knowledge of applicable computer software necessary to fulfill job duties including Microsoft Office and AutoCAD. Knowledge of FileNet and SAP a plus.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Must embrace a safety culture and maintain a safe work environment for co-workers, contractors, and the general public.
- Must be able to assist on multiple projects simultaneously and be able to work effectively under the pressure of deadlines, unexpected developments, changes in project scope, budget constraints, unforeseen field problems, and demands on time for work assignments.
- Must have strong interpersonal skills and develop and maintain relationships across FirstEnergy that facilitate the cooperation needed to completed assigned tasks and will insure others to achieve, or exceed, goals.
- Must be able to work independently as well as in teams with other FirstEnergy areas of responsibility including Planning and Protection, Project Management, Maintenance, Real Estate and Construction, as well as the Regional operating companies.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with good verbal skills and writing skills, providing comprehensive project status reports, clear and concise correspondence, and accurate information.
- Must possess strong organizational, computer, and problem-solving skills.
- Must be willing to travel throughout the service territory when needed to support substation walkdowns to gather site information and to support storm response needs.
