Qualifications

  • Associate's Degree in drafting/design technology plus 3+ years of design experience, or HS diploma with 3+ years in substation design.
  • Proficiency in MicroStation and AutoCAD.
  • 3D capability with 2D/3D engineering drawings.
  • Substation/transmission design background preferred.
  • ACE and Inventor experience are a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Create electrical schematics, substation layouts, grid plans and other power system drawings using MicroStation and AutoCAD.
  • Develop production drawings through problem analysis, design layout and calculations.
  • Execute design assignments with standard techniques and refine rough sketches.
  • Update designs with redlines on ongoing projects and communicate changes.
  • Review drawings for quality, scope, budget, and schedule compliance.
  • Organize and maintain project drawings and related information.

On-Site Role (No remote/hybrid)


Compensation: $45 - $49/hr (6 Month Contract-to-Hire, Eligible for flex 9/80)


ABOUT THE ROLE

Our client, anationally recognized, 100% employee-owned engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) firm, is seeking a Substation Designer to support the substation design team and work on independent projects.


The Substation Designer will perform various phases of planning, site evaluations, analytical design, and preparation of construction documentation and electrical plans as part of a substation design team. This role will train directly under the team's senior designer and a second lead, taking on some of their workload while supporting billability on another account. The first 90 days will focus on learning client


standards and systems (may include some drafting); independent assignments follow after that. This position offers a competitive hourly rate, benefits, and the opportunity to work with a nationally recognized EPC firm.


WHAT YOU'LL DO


  • Support substation design work, including creating electrical schematics, substation layouts, grid plans, and other electrical power system drawings using MicroStation and AutoCAD

  • Plan and develop drawings for production work, including problem analysis, design layout, and calculations for assignments of increasing variety and complexity

  • Execute design assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques, including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing system components, and refining rough sketches

  • Implement changes to designs or sketches, and update redlines or mark-ups on ongoing projects

  • Analyze reports, drawings, and tests to plan and support project design work

  • Interpret and incorporate design codes and specifications related to design requirements

  • Review design drawings for quality assurance, ensuring compliance with scope, budget, and schedule

  • Organize and maintain project drawings, plot files, and project-related information in a logical, well-structured manner

  • Communicate clearly and concisely in written and verbal formats for project and client coordination

  • Interface with an offshore support team on a limited, flexible basis (roughly 1 hour a week); not required during the first 90 days

  • Comply with all company policies and standards

  • Perform other duties as assigned


WHAT YOU BRING


  • Associate's Degree in drafting/design technology and minimum 3+ years of related design experience (drafting experience alone does not meet this requirement), OR High School Diploma/equivalent with 3+ years of related substation, transmission, or distribution design experience

  • Proficiency in MicroStation and AutoCAD

  • Advanced ability to utilize both 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings

  • Advanced knowledge in design, calculations, and design systems

  • Substation design background preferred; transmission/distribution design experience acceptable

  • Revit experience is a plus but not required; Inventor 3D experience is an acceptable transferable alternative

  • AutoCAD Electrical (ACE) experience is a plus

  • Ability to work collaboratively with Project Managers, Engineers, and Designers in a multi-disciplinary project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues and accomplish objectives

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail
