Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Pre-Construction Preparation: Review contract documents, safety plans, kickoff meetings, and schedules.
  • Project Location & Site Assessment: Identify site conditions and access constraints.
  • Scope of Work Execution: Review drawings and specifications, define structures and systems.
  • Schedule & Timeline Management: Ensure schedule adherence and monitor milestones.
  • Material Management: Verify BOMs, deliveries, and stock; track shortages and damages.
  • Environmental & Regulatory Compliance: Confirm permits and SWPPP.
  • Safety Leadership: Enforce HASP and lead daily safety meetings.
  • Field Oversight & QA: Ensure conformance to specs; conduct daily walkdowns.
  • Reporting & Tracking: Collect data; submit weekly reports and trackers.
  • Fiscal Oversight: Track variances and review invoices.
  • Contract Management: Ensure contract compliance and address non-conformances.
  • Communication & Stakeholder Management: Maintain contractor relationships and manage inquiries.
  • Resource Coordination: Coordinate with environmental, safety, SME, and land teams.

Job description

The Construction Manager (CM) serves as the field leader responsible for the safe, efficient, and successful execution of substation and transmission construction projects. Acting as the primary liaison between field activities and the General Manager, the CM ensures adherence to engineering design, contract requirements, environmental regulations, safety standards, and project schedules. This role typically involves 20% office responsibilities and 80% field oversight.

Core Responsibilities
  • Pre-Construction Preparation - Review and understand all contract documents. Review contractor Safety Plan and coordinate with Safety team. Conduct kickoff meetings and orientations. Understand permits, agreements, drawings, schedules, QA/QC, and submittals. Set expectations and train the team.
  • Project Location & Site Assessment - Identify county, town, and site. Determine greenfield or brownfield conditions. Assess access and constraints.
  • Scope of Work Execution - Review drawings, specs, and engineering packages. Define structures, equipment, and systems. Identify demolition needs. Align with engineering documents.
  • Schedule & Timeline Management - Ensure schedule adherence. Monitor milestones and critical path. Escalate delays.
  • Material Management - Compare drawings with Bill of Materials. Confirm material delivery and storage. Verify nameplates and specs. Track shortages and damages.
  • Environmental & Regulatory Compliance - Confirm permits. Ensure SWPPP and environmental compliance. Coordinate crossing approvals.
  • Safety Leadership - Enforce HASP. Encourage proactive safety culture. Conduct daily safety meetings.
  • Field Oversight & QA - Ensure compliance with specifications. Conduct daily walkdowns. Document progress.
  • Reporting & Tracking - Collect own data. Submit weekly reports and trackers. Manage team reporting.
  • Fiscal Oversight - Track variances. Review invoices. Identify cost drivers.
  • Contract Management - Ensure compliance with contract. Address non-conformances.
  • Communication & Stakeholder Management - Maintain strong contractor relationships. Communicate with Project Manager. Direct public inquiries appropriately.
  • Resource Coordination - Utilize environmental, safety, subject matter expert, and land teams.
