We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer to manage substation projects from early-stage conception through construction and commissioning. You will serve as a key technical lead, coordinating with internal teams, external engineers, and transmission owners to ensure successful project delivery.
Key responsibilities
- Manage all assigned substation projects from conception through execution, working with Early-Stage Project Managers during the conceptual phase to support engineering requirements and scope.
- Provide training, due diligence, and technical oversight of external engineers of record to ensure compliance with generation interconnection agreements, project specifications, IEEE, NESC, ASCE, and all applicable industry codes and standards.
- Secure engineering consulting resources by developing scopes of work, obtaining bids, evaluating proposals, and awarding contracts through the Integrated Supply Chain Group.
- Coordinate with project stakeholders to develop and secure substation sites, support engineering updates, and manage data and permits necessary for design and construction.
- Competitively source, select, and contract geotechnical, survey, engineering, and construction services while supporting cost estimating teams with scope assumptions.
- Represent internal and external interests on assigned projects, providing presentations and briefings on progress, issues, and risk mitigation to various management levels.
- Support Transmission Services in reviewing interconnection documentation, including system impact studies, facility studies, and interconnection agreements to ensure compliance with transmission owner and ISO requirements.
- Manage long-lead material orders to minimize delays and budget overruns; assist with scope of work creation, review, and approval for engineering services and materials.
- Support estimating teams with template updates, technical guidance, and scope modifications based on project feedback.
- Collaborate with project engineering resources across disciplines to determine priorities, work plans, and lines of demarcation.
- Ensure projects are implemented efficiently, cost-effectively, and safely in accordance with department processes, procedures, and industry standards.
- Support project commissioning activities and collaborate with component OEMs to enhance designs for better integration.
- Support legal matters including regulatory filings and hearings as needed.
Requirements - education & experience
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil/Structural Engineering
- 7+ years of experience in substation design and engineering of high voltage substation projects
- Project Engineering and/or Project Management experience with a strong bias for action
Nice-to-have / preferred skills
- PMP certification
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in a related discipline
Some travel required within North America.
