Job summary

Boston Medical Center is seeking a Behavioral Health Counselor to provide counseling to patients withdrawing from alcohol and/or other drugs in inpatient or outpatient settings at BMC Brighton. You will assess, plan, and deliver individual and group sessions, educate on relapse prevention, and coordinate care with the care team.

Responsibilities include supervising student interns, liaising with physicians and staff, and ensuring comprehensive aftercare planning.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in counseling psychology, social work, behavioral science, or equivalent.
• At least 2 years of training and/or clinical experience in substance use and/or mental health counseling.
• De-escalation certification within 1 month of hire.
• BLS certification within 1 month of hire or to be obtained.

Responsibilities

• Conduct biopsychosocial assessments and develop treatment plans for each patient.
• Provide individual and group counseling sessions.
• Educate patients about disease and recovery, including relapse prevention techniques.
• Document patient history, progress, and aftercare treatment planning clearly and concisely.
• Acquire and deliver specialization components within the treatment program.
• Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to monitor progress and discharge planning.
• Involve family members or significant others in the recovery process, including support, living arrangements, aftercare, and outpatient therapy programs.
• Encourage patients in decisions about aftercare treatment and provide information on available resources.
• Liaise with MDs, nurses, and other healthcare personnel and referral sources to address both physical and psychological aspects of care.
• Supervise assigned student interns in their clinical practice.
