Location and Hours

Lakewood Behavioral Health Clinic; occasional travel to Tacoma 19th Street Clinic.

Position Summary

This full‑time Substance Use Disorder Professional or Trainee (SUDP/T) is responsible for providing direct counseling services to patients in one‑to‑one or group formats. The counselor conducts assessments, evaluations, and intakes, and offers services to adults, youth, and families with primary diagnoses of chemical dependence and related mental health needs. The role requires adherence to a disease model of chemical dependency that emphasizes total abstinence as the basis for ongoing recovery.

Hourly Rate

$26.22 – $31.50

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide counseling and support appropriate to the age of patients served.
  • Screen and evaluate individuals and refer them to other treatment or service programs available at the facility and in the community.
  • Conduct individual and group counseling for persons confronting drug‑related problems and emerging mental health issues.
  • Implement problem‑oriented record system and submit required federal, state, and local reports, patient surveys, and monthly summaries to the Program Manager.
  • Maintain professional standards and follow facility treatment policies and federal, state, and local regulations, particularly WAC 388‑805 and relevant RCW provisions.
  • Prepare patient progress reports and completion notices for courts, probation departments, families, and referral sources as appropriate.
Conditions of Employment
  • No history or evidence of alcohol or other drug misuse for the three years immediately prior to employment, and no misuse while employed.
  • Able to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Able to speak effectively before clients or employees.
  • Perform at least 40 face‑to‑face encounters per week, or achieve a minimum of 85 direct service hours per week if encounters are fewer.
Education and/or Experience
  • For Trainee: completion of all required classes and practicum hours to become a Substance Use Disorder Professional and current registration with the State Department of Health.
  • For Professional: associate’s degree, required certification qualifying for SUDP, an active SUDP license from the Washington State Department of Health, at least three years of relevant work experience, and current First Aid, CPR, and HIV certification.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred, not required.
