Position Overview
We are hiring for a Substance Use Counselor (Regular). This role focuses on providing support to individuals with mental health and substance use challenges in residential, school, workplace, and community settings. The intervention is strength‑based, promoting recovery, symptom reduction, increased coping skills, and highest level functioning in the community.
Job Responsibilities
- Development, implementation, monitoring, and revision of the Person Centered Plan in collaboration with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Facilitate relationships and serve as a link between the organization, parents, guardians, local agencies and the community.
- Minimize negative effects of psychiatric symptoms or substance dependence on daily living and personal development by providing supportive counseling.
- Support clients to develop skill‑building activities such as daily and community living skills, socialization skills, adaptation skills, and behavior/anger management.
- Participate in a first responder on‑call system available to consumers/Natural support network 24/7/365, coordinating first‑response resources according to consumer need and PCF implementation.
- Perform case‑management functions of linking and arranging for services and referrals.
- Collaborate closely with other clinical/professional staff to maintain communication, provide feedback, standardize procedures, and expedite PCF implementation.
- Ensure that all initial and reauthorizations for services occur in a timely fashion.
- Monitor utilization of services to ensure effectiveness, appropriateness and adherence to regulations, PCF and service authorization limits.
Qualifications – Qualified Professional Criteria
- Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree (not in Human Services) with 4+ years full‑time experience with the population served; OR
- Bachelor’s Degree (Human Services field) with 2+ years full‑time experience with the population served; OR
- Master’s Degree or higher with 1+ year full‑time experience with the population served.
- Valid license, provisional license, certificate, registration, or permit issued by the governing board regulating human service professions.
- Fields of Human Service Degrees include Social Service, Sociology, Psychology, or other Human Service Degrees.
- Populations Served: Mentally Ill – Child or Adult, Substance Abuse – Adult or Child.
- License or certification: LCAS, LCAS‑A, CDAC, or equivalent NC licensure.
Pre‑employment Screening
- Complete criminal background check: name, OIG exclusions database, Child Abuse Registry, Offenders Against Individuals with Developmental Disabilities.
- Drug testing.
- Education verification and other credentialing required by the position.
- Proof of employment history or references (if required).
Driver’s Requirements (if applicable)
- Proof of driver’s license, driver’s insurance, and vehicle if required for transportation of individuals.
