Job summary

Healthcare Alternative Systems (HAS) seeks a Substance Use Counselor to provide individual and group counseling, develop treatment plans, and maintain progress notes across multiple program sites in the Chicagoland area.

You will conduct ASAM-based assessments, DUI services as needed, and coordinate referrals while maintaining documentation in the electronic health record. Strong bilingual skills in English/Spanish are required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Social/Human Sciences (Social Work) from a regionally accredited institution.
  • CADC certification by Illinois Certification Board or 2060 guidelines (2 years lifetime).
  • Knowledge of ASAM criteria and DSM V diagnosis.
  • Knowledge of DHS regulations (2060/2090) and CARF.
  • Two years of counseling experience in substance abuse (co-occurring preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counseling weekly.
  • Develop and review treatment plans and progress notes.
  • Conduct ASAM-based assessments and DUI services as needed.
  • Maintain clinical records and discharge planning.
  • Coordinate referrals and linkage with related organizations.
  • Deliver off-site and community-based services as required.
  • Participate in supervision and clinical staffing.
  • Complete documentation and weekly reports for program manager.

MISSION/VISIONHealthcare Alternative Systems (HAS) provides a continuum of multicultural and bilingual (English/Spanish) behavioral care and social services that empower individuals, families, and communities. HAS seeks to implement sustainable programs that benefit society by improving the well-being and recovery efforts of those individuals, families, and communities impacted by behavioral health problems. With eleven locations across the Chicagoland area, HAS provides services and resources to individuals at every stage in their behavioral/recovery journey so that they can be successful and become contributing members of their communities.JOB SUMMARYUnder the supervision of the Program Manager, the Substance Use Counselor provides individual and group counseling to participants, which includes presenting educational lectures, leading process groups, formulating and reviewing individualized treatment plans, and maintains progress notes. The Substance Use Counselor must be able to communicate effectively with participants and maintain linkage with related organizations.ESSENTIAL DUTIESProvides a minimum of 22 hours of direct clinical services weekly.Implements program goals.Assists staff in clinical matters and responsibilities.Audits case files to ensure compliance with agency and DBHR standards.Conducts assessments using ASAM criteria for participants as assigned.Conducts groups and provides individual counseling.Conducts DUI services, as needed.Conducts random breathalyzers and drug tests for participants.Conducts services off-site and in the community, if applicable.Maintains a pre-schedule on the EHR showing service activities as well as groups and individuals sessions.Participates in weekly clinical staffing including presenting cases.Assists with compilation and distribution of weekly reports to Program Manager.Responsible for an assigned caseload, documentation including treatment plans, case review, progress notes, status reports, discharge plans and monitor progress and response of participant to treatment.Provides an initial individual orientation/warm hand off by phone with each new participant prior to the start of services.Completes documentation of participants in the clinical records daily.Contacts participant’s case worker/referral source within the first week of treatment.Provides each participant and referral source with a status report once a month.Provides referral sources to participants when needed.Maintains participant records in accordance with agency standards.Complies with agency policies and procedures.Participates in regular agency staff meetings and training.Participates in cross-training.Assist in coverage needs as requested.Participates in scheduled supervision meetings with clinical supervisor or manager.Performs other duties as assigned.REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIESBilingual (Spanish).Must have a thorough knowledge of substance abuse and its modalities of treatment.Must have knowledge of ASAM criteria and DSM V diagnosis.Must have knowledge of DHS regulations (2060/2090) and CARF.Knowledge of Illinois DUI laws.Possess knowledge of mental illness and diagnosis, preferred.Knowledge of MS Office Applications.Must possess excellent writing and verbal communication skills.Must possess excellent interpersonal skills, be adaptable, organized, and a team player in a fast-paced and demanding work environment.Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objective without supervision.Flexible to adapt to schedules and workload to the needs and demands of the program.Possession of a valid Driver’s License or State ID. and willingness to travel for employment.Have knowledge of evidence-based practices such as Motivational Interviewing and CBT, DBT.EDUCATION & EXPERIENCEBachelor’s degree in the Social or Human Sciences of Social Work from a regionally accredited educational institution which has U.S. Department of Education approval, preferred. High school diploma or GED is required.Must have a CADC certified by Illinois Certification Board, Inc. or certified within current 2060 guidelines (2 years lifetime)Must have at least two (2) years of counseling experience in substance abuse and be co-occurring (mental health) certified, preferred.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSSedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
