Job summary

MTC operates the Flint Hills Job Corps Center in Manhattan, KS, and is seeking a qualified substance abuse counselor to support trainees through TEAP and TUPP programs.

You will develop coordination between substance abuse components and health education, provide counseling, assess students, and train staff to raise awareness and prevention efforts.

Qualifications

  • Must hold a state-approved substance abuse certification or license (CADC or CRADC).
  • One year of relevant experience required.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and computer proficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a system to promote the integration of substance abuse components with center activities.
  • Advise the center and health/wellness director on services, staffing and training requirements, initial assessment, and referrals to off-center resources.
  • Provide counseling and personal development sessions regarding substance use/abuse.
  • Assess students and develop/implement plans with counselors; provide TEAP/TUPP orientation and education to students and instructors.
  • Provide input to the counseling services department for necessary counseling and referral of students with substance use/abuse problems.
  • Ensure documentation of all student assessments and plans in medical records.
  • Provide ongoing staff training for substance use awareness, identification, counseling skills and team building.
  • Assist in providing substance-use related materials and development of health/wellness procedures regarding substance abuse.
  • Work with recreation staff to develop community recreation alternatives.
  • Refer inpatient care when needed and utilize community resources.

What you will be doing:

You’ll be responsible for maintaining an effective trainee employee assistance program (TEAP), tobacco use prevention program (TUPP), with emphasis on awareness, prevention, education, intervention, staff training, and networking with community resources.


Essential Duties:


  1. Develop a system to promote the coordination and integration of substance abuse components with medical, psychiatric, health education and other center activities.


  2. Advise the center director and health and wellness director of appropriate substance use/abuse related matters including the cost of services, staffing and training requirements, initial assessment, and counseling referrals to off center resources for ongoing care and counseling.


  3. Provide counseling and/or personal development sessions regarding substance use/abuse.


  4. Assess students with identified substance use problems; develop and implement a plan to modify or control the problem(s) by working with students and counselors; provide TEAP/TUPP orientation and TEAP/TUPP education to students and instructors.


  5. Provide input to the counseling services department for necessary counseling and referral of students with substance use/abuse problems.


  6. Ensure the documentation of all student assessments and plans are in student’s medical records regarding substance use/abuse problems.


  7. Provide ongoing comprehensive training for all staff in the substance use/abuse area with specific goals toward education and awareness, skills in identification and reporting substance use problems, individual staff member counseling skills and general team building throughout the center.


  8. Assist in providing substance use related materials and information in the health education program and development of health and wellness standing orders and center operating procedures regarding substance abuse.


  9. Work closely with center recreation staff members to develop recreation alternatives within the community.


  10. Refer any necessary in‑patient care to the health and wellness director; utilize community resources as needed.



Qualifications:


  • Preferred active, unrestricted active substance abuse certification or license per state requirement that meets minimum state licensing or certification requirements to practice in the state where the center is located (CADC or CRADC).


  • One (1) year experience


  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills and computer proficiency required.
