Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage technical efforts related to the design, integration, fabrication, and construction of complex engineering systems.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in fire protection systems, including fire alarm and fire suppression design and compliance (e.g., NFPA codes).
  • Direct and coordinate daily engineering activities supporting ongoing projects and system modifications.
  • Serve as technical lead on integration initiatives, including development and issuance of technical reports.
  • Support fabrication and installation efforts across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including project engineering, facility engineering, and installation groups.
  • Manage and track assignments, ensuring alignment with project scope, schedule, and mission objectives.
  • Interface with senior leadership and external stakeholders, including government customers, to present technical information and project updates.
  • Contribute to scope development, project realignment efforts, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Position Summary

The Subject Matter Expert I (SME-1) provides advanced technical leadership and engineering expertise in support of complex, mission-critical systems and projects. This role serves as a key authority in engineering design, integration, and execution activities, with a strong emphasis on fire protection systems and related regulatory compliance. The SME-1 leads multidisciplinary efforts across design, fabrication, and construction phases, ensuring alignment with applicable codes, standards, and project objectives. Working closely with engineering teams, project leadership, and external stakeholders, this position plays a critical role in delivering safe, compliant, and high-quality technical solutions in support of mission requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (mechanical, electrical, civil, fire protection, or related field) and a minimum of 8+ years of related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Strong experience in engineering design, integration, fabrication, and construction support
  • Demonstratedexpertisein fire protection systems, including fire alarm and fire suppression design
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards (e.g., NFPA and other industry/regulatory standards)
  • Experience leading technical efforts or serving as a technical authority on engineering projects
  • Experience supporting multidisciplinary engineering teams in complex project environments
  • Strong communicationand organizational skills, including technical reporting and stakeholder engagement
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in engineering or related technical field
  • Experience in DOE, NNSA, or other highly regulated facility environments
  • Experience supporting large-scale integration or mission-critical engineering projects
  • Experience interfacing with government customers or senior leadership
  • Familiarity with fabrication and installation oversight in complex systems
  • Strong leadership experience coordinating across multiple engineering disciplines
