VTG is seeking a Subject Matter Expert (Associate)-Cable Engineer to support our customer. The role provides expert analysis on complex problems in telecommunications and power transmission cabling.

The position leads technical direction on high‑level projects, with responsibilities including cabling splicing, conductor testing, and work at heights on poles or towers. A BA/BS in a technical discipline with 5+ years of experience and a Secret clearance are mandatory.

VTG is seeking a Subject Matter Expert (Associate)-Cable Engineer to support our customer.

What will you do?

• Under broad direction, provides expert support, analysis and research into especially complex problems, and processes relating to the subject matter.
• Serves as technical expert on high-level project teams providing technical direction, interpretation and alternatives.
• Thinks independently and demonstrates superior written and oral communications skills.
• Possesses a complete understanding and wide experience in the application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the field.
• Provides technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organizational objectives.

• Splices overhead, underground, or submarine multiple-conductor cables used in telephone communication and electric-power transmission systems.
• Climbs utility poles or towers, utilizes truck-mounted lift bucket, or descends into sewers and underground vaults where cables are located.
• Cuts lead sheath from installed cable to gain access to defective cable connections, using hacksaw.
• Cuts and peels lead sheath and insulation from newly installed cables and conductors preparatory to splicing.
• Tests (traces or phases-out) each conductor to identify corresponding conductors in adjoining cable sections, according to electrical diagrams and specifications, to prevent incorrect connections between individual communication circuits or electric power circuits, using test lamp or bell system.
• Cleans, tins, and splices corresponding conductors by twisting ends together or by joining ends with metal clips and soldering each connection.
• Covers conductors with insulating or fireproofing materials.
• Fits lead sleeve around cable joint and wipes molten lead into joints between sleeve and cable sheath to produce moisture proof joint.
• Fills completed sleeve with insulating oil. May work on energized circuits to avoid interruption of service.
• May locate and repair leaks in pressurized cable.
• May work on board marine craft when splicing underwater cable.

Do you have what it takes?

• Must have a BA/BS in a technical discipline with at least 5 years of experience.
• Must have and maintain a Secret clearance.
• Eligible for a Top Secret.
• Willing to travel 75% or more

VTG’s estimated starting pay range is $89,714-$152,510 annually, which is a general guideline for the geographic location. When extending an offer, VTG also considers work experience, education, skill level, market considerations and may possibly include contractual requirements which may cause an offer to fall outside of this range.
