Job summary

Alameda Boys & Girls Club is seeking an Assistant Program Director to provide hands-on leadership in a trauma-sensitive environment. You will supervise staff, coordinate daily programs, and support youth and families on site.

The role requires walking and standing during program hours and entails collaboration with the Program Director to schedule staff and plan activities, including camps and events.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • 3+ years in youth development or related field.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Successfully pass DOJ fingerprint and background clearance.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, direct, plan and coordinate operations.

Responsibilities

Job description

Overview:

At the Alameda Boys & Girls Club, we inspire and enable all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. Our Club supports youth ages 6-18 through programs that support academic success, character and leadership, health and well-being, and workforce readiness.

Primary Function:

Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Assistant Program Director is expected to provide active leadership, sound decision-making and problem solving, and regular support to staff, youth, and parents in a trauma-sensitive environment. This role serves in a supervisory capacity when the Program Director is absent. This is a hands-on, on-the-floor role requiring consistent walking and standing during program hours.

Key Responsibilities:
Program Operations
  • Assist in the daily oversight of program operations, safety and risk management, and staff and volunteer management
  • Run youth programming when additional support is needed
  • Direct and ensure the completion of all opening and closing tasks
  • Monitor program areas to ensure member safety and complete incident reports as needed
  • Assist with curriculum planning and program schedules
  • Lead the preparation and facilitation of seasonal and summer camps
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of special programs or events
Youth Development
  • Foster a physically and emotionally safe environment
  • Build positive relationships with youth and families
  • Promote positive behavior management
  • Support social-emotional learning
  • Respond and address Club member conflicts and behaviors
Leadership
  • Act as the on-site supervisor when Program Director is absent
  • Lead Friday Assemblies with all Club members and staff
  • Provide in-service training as needed to staff and volunteers
  • Provide guidance and role modeling to members and staff
  • Demonstrate leadership to assure conduct, safety, and development of members
  • Work with Program Director to develop daily program and staff schedules, conduct staff meetings, and recruit/train new hires
  • Communicate with parents on a regular basis regarding member behavior, membership and camp registration, upcoming events and reminders, etc.
  • Ensure a productive and effective work environment
In addition to the specific professional job duties, must also possess the ability to:
  • Effectively use Microsoft Word, Outlook mail and Outlook calendar
  • Work effectively with volunteers, parents, school officials, and other community members
  • Understand neurodiversity and ability to adapt programming and approach as needed
  • Understand youth and adolescent development, including social, emotional, and cognitive development
  • Continue personal and professional growth by participating in trainings/classes
  • Prioritize assignments
  • Work independently and monitor own performance objectives
  • Work collaboratively and be a team player
  • Represent the Club positively in the community
  • Should be able to lift 25 pounds
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • 3+ years of experience working in youth development or related field
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Successfully pass a Department of Justice fingerprint and background clearance
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, direct, plan and coordinate operations
  • Leadership skills, including problem solving, decision making, and delegation
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
