Job summary

  • Operate vivarium equipment including cage washers and related devices.
  • Perform husbandry duties: care, feeding, watering, sanitation.
  • Receive, move, stack and inventory animal feed, bedding, and supplies.
  • Participate in employee training and staff meetings.
  • Conduct daily health and welfare checks and report findings; assist veterinary staff as needed.
  • Maintain accurate room logs, health records, databases, and other required records.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Salary Range: $10.00 To $10.00 Hourly

Job Summary: Laboratory Animal Care and Husbandry duties for a wide variety of small animals in the campus vivarium.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Operate and maintain vivarium equipment including cage washers, floor scrubbers, computers, and other specialized laboratory equipment as required for the care of the animals.
  • Perform husbandry duties including animal care, feeding, watering, and cage sanitation.
  • Receive move, stack and inventory animal feed, bedding, and supplies.
  • Participate in employee training and staff meetings.
  • Perform daily health checks and regular welfare checks and report findings; provide medical/other treatments and euthanasia as prescribed by veterinary staff.
  • Maintain accurate room logs, health records, databases, and other required records (by paper and computer)
  • Other duties as assigned
Education Employment eligibility:
  • Currently enrolled Delaware Valley University student
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States and provide required documentation to verify identity and employment eligibility
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Animal Science majors preferred with knowledge of animal care requirements, husbandry regulations, and basic animal handling and disease conditions. Animal handling and technical skills will be trained.
  • Interpersonal skills, oral, written communication skills and ability to follow oral and written instruction in English. Ability to utilize computer and computer software including Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point, and other standard office equipment.
  • Must be focused, detail-oriented, reliable and able to work independently and as an effective team member.
  • Affinity for animals and respect for their welfare are essential.
  • As essential staff you may be required to work during emergency events. Weekend and holiday work is expected (on a rotation).
  • Must not have allergies to animals to a degree that prevents performance of required duties.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Occasionally lifting 50 lbs or less
  • Frequently lifting 25 lbs or more
  • Typically standing or walking
  • Typically bending, crouching, stooping
  • Climbing ladders, step stools
  • Using tools requiring high dexterity
  • Exposure to environmental conditions (high humidity, hot steam, slippery surfaces, warm air temperatures, low illumination)

  • Exposure to animal feces and specimens
  • May be exposed to animal bites, scratches, allergens and contagious diseases
