Job summary

Delaware Valley University is seeking a Student Animal Care Technician to join the Small Animal Science Center Team in Doylestown, PA. The role supports vivarium operations, animal care, feeding, and health monitoring; hours vary including mornings, nights, weekends, holidays, and breaks on rotation.

You must be a DelVal student, eligible to work in the United States, and able to lift up to 50 lbs. Training is provided; prior animal care knowledge is helpful but not required as technical skills

Qualifications

• ABC majors preferred with knowledge of animal care requirements and basic animal handling.
• Interpersonal and written communication skills.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions in English.

Responsibilities

• Operation and maintenance of vivarium equipment including cage washers, floor scrubbers, and sterilization equipment
• Receive, move, and stack animal feed, bedding, and supplies
• May breed, wean and euthanize animals under supervision. Handle, sex and restrain animals
• Perform husbandry duties including animal care, feeding, watering and cage sanitation
• Observe all laboratory animals for abnormal/unusual behavior and report all such incidents; provide medical treatments as prescribed by veterinary staff
• Maintain accurate health records, databases, and other required records
• Additional duties to support the program
• Participate in employee training and staff meetings

We are looking for a Student Animal Care Technician to join our Small Animal Science Center Team!

Laboratory Animal Care and Husbandry Duties at the Center

Reporting to the Facility Manager, the hours vary and include mornings, nights, weekends, holidays and breaks (on rotation) and essential staff are required to care for animals 24/7/365 during emergencies and shutdowns. We are seeking students who would like to commit to the position beyond one semester.

Essential job responsibilities include:

• Operation and maintenance of vivarium equipment including cage washers, floor scrubbers, and sterilization equipment
• Receive, move, and stack animal feed, bedding, and supplies
• May breed, wean and euthanize animals under supervision. Handle, sex and restrain animals
• Perform husbandry duties including animal care, feeding, watering and cage sanitation

Preferred qualifications include:

• ABC majors preferred with knowledge of animal care requirements, husbandry regulations and basic animal handling and disease conditions. Technical skills will be trained

The successful candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

• Some interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills and ability to follow oral, and written instruction in English
• Ability to utilize computer software

Physical demands and working conditions for this position include:

• Indoor position with some manual labor
• May be exposed to communicable diseases, hazardous substances and risk of allergy and injury from animals
• Required to wear personal protective equipment including gloves, eye protection and respirators for up to 6 hours at a time
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Must have manual dexterity and adequate physical strength and stamina for handling animals, feeds, supplies and equipment operation.
• Must have physical agility and the ability to stand, bend, reach, and perform moderate activity in very warm and humid environments and low light conditions.
• Must have adequate visual and auditory acuity
• Must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform all duties
