Palmer College Foundation’s Palmer Academic Success Services (P.A.S.S.) seeks motivated student tutors for the PASS tutor work-study program. Positions begin in fall and require a GPA of 3.0 or higher with eligibility for federal work-study.

Submit a resume, letter of interest and faculty recommendation by the stated deadline. Tutors will attend professional development sessions, work with faculty, and maintain detailed attendance and session logs while upholding FERPA confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Attend professional development sessions each trimester for updated information.
  • Attend team meetings with the Coordinator and Director as needed.
  • Contract for a set number of hours per trimester and adjust with coordinator.
  • Arrive prepared for study strategy sessions and communicate changes in advance.
  • Submit accurate timesheets in accordance with policies and be paid for scheduled hours.
  • Collaborate with faculty to ensure content aligns with class materials.
  • Clarify and reinforce learning through questioning and discussion, not lecturing.
  • Provide help with course content, study skills, notetaking, time management, orientation, and test-taking.
  • Maintain and submit attendance records monthly; log sessions and content reviewed in the PASS log.
  • FERPA confidentiality applies; information may be shared with Academic Support Services staff only as appropriate.

***This position is for current Palmer College of Chiropractic students***PASS Tutor Work-Study Applications, Due September 28Academic Support Services is seeking motivated, dependable students with strong communication and interpersonal skills to serve as peer mentor PASS tutors. Now hiring multiple PASS tutor work-study positions that will begin in the fall term (Pathology & Tecnhique). GPA requirements and financial aid eligibility required. Interested applicants can apply via Palmer’s employment website and will need to upload a resume, letter of interest including position(s) applying for and faculty recommendation by Monday, September 28. Responsible to the Coordinator of Palmer Academic Success Services (P.A.S.S.)program for successful performance of assigned duties.2. Assists Student Academic Support Services personnel as necessary to assure thesuccessful performance of their assigned job duties.Specific Duties and ResponsibilitiesA. Attend the P.A.S.S. program professional development session at the beginning ofeach trimester for updated information and preparation for the new trimester. Thedevelopment session will include discussion of indicators that a student may needa referral to Personal Counseling, Academic Advising, or Student DisabilityServices. It is important for Study Session Leaders to be aware of and respect theboundaries between facilitating student learning and counseling. Referrals are tobe submitted in writing (email acceptable) to the P.A.S.S. Program Coordinatorand as such are confidential.B. Study Session Leaders will attend meetings periodically as a team with theCoordinator of the P.A.S.S. program and/or the Director of Student AcademicSupport and any other Academic Advisor.C. Study Session Leaders contract for a specific number of hours per trimester basedupon their schedule and availability. Any significant change in the number ofhours worked or the times the hours are scheduled are to be discussed with theP.A.S.S. program Coordinator prior to making the adjustment.D. Study Session Leaders are expected to arrive at their scheduled study strategysessions prepared and on time. If a Study Session Leader must cancel a studystrategy session, the P.A.S.S. program Coordinator should be contacted inadvance as soon as possible so that an announcement may be made or acancellation notice can be posted prior to the scheduled start of the study strategysession.E. As Federal Work study students, Study Session Leaders must submit accuratetimesheets that comply with policies and procedures of Financial Planning and StudentAcademic Support and will be paid for hours scheduled or approved by the P.A.S.S.program Coordinator.F. Study Session Leaders are expected to work collaboratively with faculty memberswhose course they are supporting. It is advisable that Study Session Leadersspend some portion of the scheduled hours on a weekly basis in communicationwith faculty to insure the study strategy session content closely corresponds towhat the faculty member has presented and emphasized in class.G. Study Session Leaders should focus on clarifying, reviewing, enhancing, andreinforcing students’ learning through questioning and discussion, not lecturing.H. Study Session Leaders provide assistance with course content, study skills, notetaking, time management, orientation, and test-taking skills.I. Study Session Leaders are expected to maintain and submit accurate attendancerecords for all Study Sessions monthly. There is the additional expectation thatthe Study Session Leader will provide accurate, consistent entries in the P.A.S.S.program log, including the total number of students assisted in the Open Lab (asapplies), date, length of the session, and the content reviewed.J. Formative and summative evaluations will be conducted for all Study SessionLeaders toward the end of the trimester and as needed.K. All information in the P.A.S.S. program log sheet and information provided bystudents to Study Session Leaders (such as quiz or exam scores) are confidentialunder FERPA. The Study Session Leader may share personal informationpertaining to a student with Student Academic Support Services staff forconsultation. Sharing of confidential information with someone other thanStudent Academic Support Services staff without written consent by the studentor without consultation with Student Academic Support Services staff constitutesbreach of confidentiality, resulting in dismissal of the Study Session Leader.Requirements and SkillsStudents who have demonstrated a high level of academic success, have the skills,abilities and desire to facilitate the learning and academic development of other students,and possess strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills. Specifically,students should maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and have attained a 3.5 GPA or higher inthe course whose review they are facilitating. Candidates with a background in the basicsciences are preferred.
