Job summary

Prince George County Public Schools is seeking a School Bus Driver - Substitute to assist with transporting students on scheduled routes and special excursions, prioritizing safety and care for students. The role reports to the Director of Transportation and the Coordinator of Transportation.

Responsibilities include pre-trip inspections, following routes, driving on schedule, conducting emergency drills, and maintaining a positive image of the school division.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED equivalency; waiver after interview.
• Submit at least two references attesting to ability, character and qualifications.
• Meet state licensing requirements and driving test standards.
• Satisfactorily pass the knowledge examination.
• Meet local or state standards for driver record checks.
• All drivers must submit to random alcohol/drug testing.
• Ability to operate all vehicle types used in transporting students.
• Ability to operate telephone and radio communication when necessary.

Responsibilities

• Conduct pre-trip inspection of the school bus prior to stops and on trips.
• Use established routes and designated bus stops.
• Operate the bus on the approved time schedule.
• Report bus accidents and student injuries to authorities.
• Conduct emergency evaluation drills per division regulations.
• Instruct riders regarding safe conduct and responsible behavior.
• Drive defensively under varying traffic conditions and weather.
• Prioritize student safety in all operations.
• Report absences to allow scheduling of substitutes.
• Perform bus housekeeping duties inside and out.
• Report bus defects to supervisor or head of mechanics.
• Maintain positive working relationships with staff and students.
