Job summary

The University of Georgia is seeking a Large Animal Surgery Assistant to support after-hours and weekend emergencies in the Large Animal Surgery Department at the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

The role includes setting up the surgical suite, handling large animals, assisting with anesthesia and patient transfer, and maintaining a clean, sterile environment while providing excellent care and clear communication with the surgery team and clients.

Qualifications

  • Comfortable working with large animals (horses, cows, sheep, etc.).
  • Properly handle and restrain various species of animals.
  • Effectively communicate.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment while demonstrating excellent customer service, high degree of confidentiality, openness to teaching and providing consultation to a variety of stakeholders.

  • Clean and disinfect rooms, surgery tables, and mats according to protocol.
  • Clean and run instruments in washer after surgery.
  • Clean and properly disinfect equipment used.
  • Set up room for next surgery.

Position Summary

The Large Animal Emergency Surgery Assistant is utilized after-hours and on weekends to act as a circulating assistant in the Large Animal Surgery Department.

Responsibilities
  • Set-up surgical suite for emergency surgery.
  • Position animal on surgical table with assistance from surgery team.
  • Complete appropriate preparation of surgical site.
  • Perform closed sterile gloving technique.
  • Assist with preparation of sterile donning of surgical gowns for surgery team.

Physical Demands
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Sit, stoop, bend intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.
  • Wear all protective gear including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles, etc.
  • Work for long periods of time with arms extended.
  • Work within an environment that has high levels of animal sounds, bodily fluids that need disposal, and open wound management.
