Job Description

Vision: The student support specialist (SSS), will work to instill CASEL Competencies at a tier one and two level. The SSS will be responsible for building trusting relationships with children who require additional support in the area of social-emotional learning (SEL) to help make students available for learning. The SSS will assess, support and teach children who exhibit behaviors that impede their overall progress.

Elementary/Middle school teacher or counselor to work with students and faculty providing social, emotional, and behavioral support.

Description: Seeking a full-time student support specialist to work with students that need support in their social-emotional development. This person will be responsible for working both individually and in small -group settings with students that need to further develop the five competencies of social emotional development: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision‑making. Applicants should be familiar with the developmental period of young adolescence, should be adept at problem-solving in the face of challenges, and should love working with at‑risk students. Counseling background and/or behavioral experience preferred.

Roles of the Position: In this role, the educator will provide high‑quality instruction (free‑standing as well as integrated into other subjects) and general practices that support SEL, to help students develop SEL core competencies (tier one). The educator and support staff will also use data to inform when additional efforts are needed and provide (or help access) supplemental supports based on individual students' social and emotional needs (tier two). Tier one SEL will generally occur in whole‑school, whole‑class settings, while tier two may be provided throught targeted group instruction, embedded within a classroom setting, in individualized work with students, and at times a separate setting with an emphasis on getting students back to class and available for learning.

Additional Responsibilities of SSS:

  • Communicate and consult with in school support staff
  • Determine differentiated activities to address content
  • Meet the educational and emotional needs of students with behavior/emotional and social issues
  • Maintain consistent communication with parents about student performance, issues, and accomplishments
  • Modify individual students' assignments based on a child’s emotional availability for learning

Position Type: Full-time

Salary: $55,374 to $104,806 Per Year

    POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
    - Bachelor's Degree, with a minimum of three years of experience in schools.
    - Successful experience in middle school.
    - MA DESE Certification
    - Demonstrated mastery in the area of study and ability to teach within and across academic disciplines
    - A desire to integrate curriculum with other subjects and to teach collaboratively
    - Demonstrate an understanding of child development with an emphasis on social and emotional well being
    - Ability to work collaboratively with teams to identify student and classroom needs.
    - Ability to work collaboratively with other members of a school or department to accomplish common goals.
    - Ability to collect and analyze data efficiently and effectively.
    - Ability to collaborate with staff in implementing specially designed instruction, accommodations, and effective data collection tools.
    - Ability to work independently while setting priorities and meeting critical deadlines.
    - Skilled at positive and effective communication with students, parents, and staff.
    - Skilled at working with a diverse student population of students with disabilities. education, training, and experience
  • At least 3 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
