Job summary

Department of Education of the City of New York is seeking a school aide to support teachers and students. Under supervision, you will relieve teachers of non-teaching tasks and supervise students during entry, lunch, dismissal, and drills, while assisting with clerical duties and materials handling.

Qualifications

• No high school diploma or GED required.
• Excellent attendance and punctuality.
• Demonstrated ability to work with supervisors and other school-based staff.
• Demonstrated history of good human relations.
• Demonstrated ability to efficiently carry out assignments.
• Bilingual candidates may be considered for schools with language needs.
• Ability to walk or stand for long periods.
• Ability to lift objects up to 10 lbs.
• Experience working with students, preferably high school-age.
• Ability to hold high school students to high expectations.
• Team player with a strong sense of personal responsibility.
• Hard-working, urgent, and energetic.

Responsibilities

• Relieves teachers of school activities which do not require teaching or professional skills.
• Relieves teachers during yard, hall, lavatory, study hall and other monitorial duties.
• Handles, stores, and distributes textbooks, instructional supplies and special materials.
• Assists with clerical work of a routine nature.
• Assists in maintaining order in the lunchroom and facilitates lunch service.
• Assists with school clerical work of a routine nature.
• Checks reports, notes, library lists, etc.
• Handles the arrival and departure of children transported to school by bus.
• Receives children in the lunchroom, directs them in washing, wrapping disposal, and lining up for lunch.
• Supervises and leads children in daily activities, including entry, dismissal, lunch and drills.
