Job summary

The Academic Advising Specialist at San José City College reports to the Dean of Instruction (Health & Wellness). The role supports enrollment, academic and career information for pre-college and college students, enhancing achievement by coordinating educational activities and services.

The position requires strong communication, data management, and the ability to work with diverse student groups; typical schedule is 8:00 a.m.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or equivalent.
• One year of experience in customer service, preferably in college or trade school.
• Knowledge of academic advising processes and college policies.
• Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work with diverse student populations.

Responsibilities

• Provide routine assistance to the counseling/special programs department, regarding academic advising and transfer information.
• Interpret placement results and assist with financial aid and college preparation.
• Assist students with career exploration based on counseling results and assessments.
• Inform students about degrees, certificates, programs, and course requirements.
• Maintain student information and prepare reports as required by funding sources or the College.
• Support new student orientation and organize informational materials.
• Participate in career fairs and college visitations, and perform general clerical duties.
