Position Overview

Provides evaluation of and care for respiratory therapy patients under the direct supervision of a licensed registered or certified respiratory therapist.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Certification, and Licensure:

1. Licensed by West Virginia Board of Respiratory Care under a student temporary permit, or applicable state where services will be performed.
2. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

Under supervision of a licensed respiratory therapist, this position will:

1. Set up and maintain low flow oxygen devices (6 LPM or less), including nasal cannula or simple mask.
2. Set up and maintain aerosol devices with Fi02 ≤ 50%.
3. Deliver medications via small volume nebulizer, MDI, or dry powder inhaler.
4. Measure peak flow, perform simple spirometry, and pulse oximetry.
5. Administer airway clearance therapies such as therapy vest, chest physiotherapy, incentive spirometry, suctioning, and PEEP therapies.
6. Communicate effectively with healthcare team members regarding patient care.
7. Assist with patient and family education alongside healthcare team members.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to:

1. Stand and walk for extended periods.
2. Lift, push, or pull up to 40 pounds.

Work Environment

Maintain awareness of environmental factors and infection control to ensure a safe patient care environment.

Skills and Abilities

Require good interpersonal communication skills and the ability to multitask, problem solve, and make decisions.

Additional Information

For second-year Respiratory Therapy students. Casual position with variable shifts. Minimum of 24 hours per 4-week schedule required.
