Job description

Job Title:Student RecruiterDepartment:Academic Affairs Administration | Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture, and Society

Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture, and Society

The Ohio State University’s motto, Disciplina in Civitatem, or “education for citizenship,” is not merely a slogan; it is an exhortation to remain focused on the responsibility to develop an informed, engaged, and civic‑minded citizenry. It is essential to fulfilling Ohio State’s land‑grant mission.

The Salmon P. Chase Center is a multidisciplinary university center that conducts teaching, research, and public programming concerning the core texts and great debates of Western civilization; the principles, ideals, and institutions of the American and Ohio political order; and the foundations of responsible leadership and informed citizenship. It is an independent academic unit of the University. The Center is a leader of the growing cadre of similar centers of civic thought and leadership in Ohio and throughout the country, as well as in the K‑12 classical and liberal arts school movement.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture, and Society is conducting a search for a Student Recruiter who will work closely with the Center’s Assistant Director. The Student Recruiter, as with all members of the Center, should embrace the Center’s mission.

The successful candidate will primarily work to implement the Center’s outreach and recruitment efforts for the purpose of yielding students for the Center’s degrees, programs, and courses. The Student Recruiter will work to recruit both K‑12 and Ohio State students to the Chase Center, and will be experienced in recruiting students from a wide range of backgrounds and from different kinds of K‑12 schools.

The Student Recruiter will assist in a range of strategic and administrative initiatives that ensure effective recruitment of students to the Chase Center. The Student Recruiter will work with limited supervision to help develop, deliver, measure, evaluate, and continuously improve these initiatives to optimize effectiveness with relevant audiences.

The Student Recruiter will assist in the development and implementation of procedures for strategic engagement, collaborative relationships, and meaningful partnerships with K‑12 schools in Ohio and elsewhere, including in the K‑12 classical context. Such engagement with K‑12 schools will involve visiting schools, their families, and students, and helping plan and implement recruitment events for both prospective and admitted students (on and off campus).

The Student Recruiter may spend 4‑8 business days each month traveling regionally to engage in recruiting activities. Overnight travel to attend recruitment events will be required up to 12 times per year. A flexible daily schedule and the ability to work occasional evenings and weekends is necessary. The Student Recruiter will also occasionally be asked to help recruit participants for the Center’s other activities (e.g., K‑12 teacher professional development workshops).

Finally, the Student Recruiter will be expected to handle all interactions with enthusiasm, civility, respect, and professionalism to promote and create a welcoming atmosphere for faculty, students, and families. He or she will also maintain confidentiality in all matters of business responsibility and student involvement.

Salary and benefits are competitive.

Required Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Chase Center’s mission of citizenship education.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a field relevant to the Center’s mission.
  • 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Capacity to work with K‑12 classical/liberal arts schools.
  • Demonstrated poise, professionalism, good judgment, and ability to take the extra step to meet customer needs.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast‑paced, changing environment, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Regular in‑person attendance is expected.
  • Record of, or demonstrated promise in, community and partnership development.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel regionally on a regular basis.
