Job summary

MedStar Health is seeking nursing externs for a winter cohort in the Union Memorial Hospital Emergency Department. The program runs for five weeks with 12-hour shifts, prioritizing hands-on learning and mentorship from an experienced RN mentor within a team-oriented ED setting.

Externs will gain exposure to critical, stroke, pediatric, and cardiology care, with bi-weekly educational sessions and mentor support to build clinical skills and confidence for a future nursing career.

Qualifications

• Active enrollment in an accredited RN program.
• Must be graduating May/August/December 2027.
• Official transcripts required at time of hire and at end of each semester to validate active enrollment.
• BLS (CPR for Healthcare Providers) certification is required by time of hire.

Responsibilities

• Externs work full-time hours with 12-hour shifts for five weeks during the Winter Cohort.
• Receive one-on-one mentorship and coaching from an experienced RN mentor.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary care team within MedStar Union Memorial Hospital ED.
• Time off not permitted during the cohort; no work on Christmas or New Year’s Day.

About the Job

THIS IS A NIGHT SHIFT POSITION - YOU MUST BE ABLE TO COMMIT TO WORKING NIGHT SHIFT DURING WINTER BREAK AND DURING YOUR UPCOMING SEMESTER(S)

This position will be based in our 50-bed Emergency Department at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. The ED is structured into 34 main ED beds, 12 non-urgent beds, and 4 behavioral health rooms. The ED cares for complex patients in a team-centric environment including critical, stroke, pediatric, and cardiology care as well as being on the front lines for our National Hand Center located at MUMH. Extern experience gained in this unit can provide a solid entry into the demanding specialty of Emergency Nursing post-graduation.

Gain valuable hands-on experience while working alongside an experienced RN mentor and interdisciplinary care team. For at least 50% of your clinical time, you will receive one-on-one mentorship, coaching, and support to help build your clinical skills, critical thinking, and confidence as a future nurse.

You willalso be supported by a Nursing Professional Development Specialist andparticipatein bi-weekly educational sessions designed to enhance your learning experience. This is an excellent opportunity to develop meaningful connections and explore a future careeronthe unit of your choice.

Program Start Date: December 7th to allow all student the opportunity to complete on-line modules; The first in-person (Nursing Clinical Orientation) day will be December 22nd

Program Expectations

• During the Winter Cohort, (after completion of the clinical orientation day) externs will work full-time hours, consisting of 12-hour shifts, for approximately five weeks.
• Your schedule will align with your assigned nurse preceptor's schedule throughout the program.
• Due to the intensive nature of the cohort, time off is notpermittedduring this period.
• Please note: Nurse externs do not work on legal holidays (Christmas and New Year's Day).

Post-Program Commitment

• Upon successful completion of the program, externs in good standing will be expected to continue employment in a per diem role through graduation.
• Ongoing employment as a nurse extern requires a commitment of 16 hours per pay period (biweekly).
• Flexible scheduling options are available during the academic semester, allowing you to choose between 8-hour or 12-hour shifts to support a healthy balance between work and school.

Pay

$20.12 per hour

This position has a hiring range of USD $20.12 - USD $20.12 /Hr.

Education/Training

License/Certification

No license is required for this position; BLS (CPR for Healthcare Providers) certification is required by time of hire.
