Job summary

MedStar Health is offering a Winter Student Nurse Extern Program for nursing students slated to graduate in 2027. You will work under an RN mentor and inter-disciplinary care team, receiving one-on-one coaching to build clinical skills and confidence as you advance toward licensure.

The program runs for about five weeks with full-time 12-hour shifts, aligned to your preceptor's schedule, and no time off during the cohort. After completion, you may continue per diem through graduation.

Qualifications

• Active enrollment in an accredited RN program; must graduate in 2027.
• Official transcripts required at hire and each semester to validate enrollment.
• BLS (CPR for Healthcare Providers) certification required by time of hire.

For at least 50% of your clinical time,you willreceive one-on-one mentorship, coaching, and support to help build your clinical skills, critical thinking, and confidence as a future nurse.

You willalso be supported by a Nursing Professional Development Specialist andparticipatein bi-weekly educational sessions designed to enhance your learning experience. This is an excellent opportunity to develop meaningful connections and explore a future careeronthe unit of your choice.

Program Start Date: December 7th - This date will allow for time to complete on-line modules prior to the in-person Student Nurse Extern Clinical Orientation Day which is scheduled for December 22nd from 7am until 4:30pm.

Program Expectations:

• During the Winter Cohort, externs will work full-time hours, consisting of 12-hour shifts, for approximately five weeks.
• Your schedule will align with your assigned nurse preceptor's schedule throughout the program.
• Due to the intensive nature of the cohort, time off is notpermittedduring this period.
• Please note: Nurse externsdo not work on legal holidays(Christmas and New Year’s Day).

Post-Program Commitment:

• Upon successful completion of the program, externs in good standingwillbeexpectedto continue employment in a per diem role through graduation.
• Ongoing employment as a nurse extern requires a commitment of 16 hours per pay period (biweekly).
• Flexible scheduling options are available during the academic semester, allowing you to choose between 8-hour or 12-hour shifts to support a healthy balance between work and school.

Pay: $20.12 per hour
