Job summary

MedStar Health's Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore invites RN students graduating in 2027 to join the Winter Student Nurse Extern Program on the Medical Surgical Unit. You will care for a diverse adult patient population under RN mentorship and a collaborative care team, building essential clinical skills for post-graduate specialties.

You will receive one-on-one mentorship for at least 50% of clinical time, participate in bi-weekly educational sessions, and explore a future unit of choice.

Qualifications

• Active enrollment in an accredited RN program and graduating in May/August/December 2027.
• BLS (CPR for Healthcare Providers) certification required by time of hire.

Responsibilities

• Extern will work full-time hours (12-hour shifts) for about five weeks.
• Work under an RN mentor and interdisciplinary care team with bi-weekly educational sessions.
• Develop core clinical skills and confidence for future nursing roles.

About the Job

(RN) Nursing students slated to graduate in 2027 are encouraged to apply now for our Winter Student Nurse Extern Program

Medical Surgical Unit - This day shift position will be based on our 32-bed Medical Surgical Unit at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital. As an extern, you will care for a diverse adult patient population with asthma, COPD, pneumonia, sickle cell, diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, infections, and dementia, among other conditions. Working with a strong, tenured team this unit will help to build solid core clinical skills which can translate to many specialties post-graduation.

Gain valuable hands-on experience while working alongside an experienced RN mentor and interdisciplinary care team. For at least 50% of your clinical time, you will receive one-on-one mentorship, coaching, and support to help build your clinical skills, critical thinking, and confidence as a future nurse.

You will also be supported by a Nursing Professional Development Specialist and participate in bi-weekly educational sessions designed to enhance your learning experience. This is an excellent opportunity to develop meaningful connections and explore a future career on the unit of your choice.

Program Start Date

December 7th to allow all student the opportunity to complete on-line modules; The first in-person (Nursing Clinical Orientation) day will be December 22nd.

Program Expectations

• During the Winter Cohort, (after completion of the clinical orientation day) externs will work full-time hours, consisting of 12-hour shifts, for approximately five weeks.
• Your schedule will align with your assigned nurse preceptor's schedule throughout the program.
• Due to the intensive nature of the cohort, time off is not permitted during this period.
• Please note: Nurse externs do not work on legal holidays (Christmas and New Year’s Day).

Post-Program Commitment

• Upon successful completion of the program, externs in good standing will be expected to continue employment in a per diem role through graduation.
• Ongoing employment as a nurse extern requires a commitment of 16 hours per pay period (biweekly).
• Flexible scheduling options are available during the academic semester, allowing you to choose between 8-hour or 12-hour shifts to support a healthy balance between work and school.

Pay

$20.12 per hour

Education/Training

Active enrollment in an accredited RN program; Must be graduating from your program in May/August/December 2027. Official transcripts will be required at time of hire and at the end of each semester to validate active enrollment.

License/Certification

No license required for this position; BLS (CPR for Healthcare Providers) certification is required by time of hire.
