Job summary

UNC Health in North Carolina invites nursing students to join the Student Nurse Extern program for Summer 2027. You will work under an RN partner, observe the nursing process, and provide hands-on CNA-level care in inpatient or clinic settings.

Successful applicants will be enrolled in an accredited BSN/ADN program, have completed the first year, and submit required documents including recommendations and an attendance commitment.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled in an accredited prelicensure nursing program.
• Successfully completed junior/1st year in BSN or ADN.
• Resume and cover letter with required details including activities and experiences.
• Two instructor recommendations, one from clinical rotation.
• Ability to balance schedule with studies and attendance commitments.
• Clinical aptitude and organizational skills are important.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information and report changes to RN or provider.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide care/treatments per plan of care including vital signs, wound care, and basic procedures.
• Assist with activities of daily living and patient comfort.
• Support indirect care: maintaining cleanliness, stocking supplies, and charting.
