Job summary

Washtenaw Community College is seeking a Part-Time Coordinator for the Student Newspaper to guide student journalists, ensure AP style and accuracy, and manage editorial processes for both print and online content.

You will work with scholarship recipients and contributors, develop training materials, and maintain archives, reporting to the Director of Student Development and Activities. The role emphasizes ethical guidance and professional development.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience editing or writing for a professional newspaper.
  • At least one year of full-time journalism experience.
  • Knowledge of Canons of Journalism and SPJ ethics.
  • Excellent writing and record-keeping skills.
  • Intermediate knowledge of online media, graphic design, and video technologies.
  • Detail-oriented, self-starter with the ability to plan ahead.
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to use AI tools and assess AI-generated content.

Responsibilities

  • Advise student scholarship recipients, contributors, and ad team.
  • Support student leadership in editorial decisions and publishing consistency.
  • Attend monthly meetings with student editor and oversee production process.
  • Conduct weekly post-publication reviews and provide feedback to students.
  • Communicate updates to the Director and maintain records of meetings.
  • Maintain archives of print and digital publications.
  • Assist advisory board meetings with scheduling and logistics.
  • Utilize AI-enabled tools to support duties while ensuring confidentiality.
