Position Summary

The Student Life and Events Coordinator enhances the campus experience by developing and coordinating student engagement initiatives, coordinating campus events, and managing facility rental operations for Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) Espanola and El Rito campuses. This role integrates student engagement, event planning, and space utilization to support a vibrant, well-coordinated campus environment supporting positive first impressions and expectations of continued quality service. It is therefore imperative that the Student Life and Events Coordinator, working with the President and Provost’s offices, impart the college’s core values of service and school spirit. This position reports to the AVP for Student Success.

Duties & Responsibilities
Student Life/Student Activities
  • Provide vision and leadership for innovative, engaging student activities. Plans programming for students in a wide range of activities on weekdays and weekends. Plans programs to encourage social connections, student involvement, and to raise awareness of social and cultural issues.

  • Contribute to new student orientation programs and initiatives.

  • Collaborate with campus and community partners to provide campus programming and events.

  • Partner with marketing/communications to promote events.

  • Serve as advisor to the Student Senate. Duties include weekly one on one meetings with the Student Senate President, monitoring spending, fostering leadership, maintaining the standards of the college’s values, policies, and the Student Senate constitution.

  • Coordinate welcoming events to encourage student involvement and shared governance.

  • Oversee student clubs and organizations, including coordination of clubs.

  • Participate in the organization and evaluation of student leadership opportunities on campus.

  • Manage budget for areas of responsibility by planning and monitoring spending for activities/events programming.

  • Manage account expenditures related to student organizations.

Events
  • Serve as the primary coordinator for campus facility reservations and external/internal rental requests.
  • Maintain an accurate master calendar of space usage.
  • Review and approve requests in alignment with institutional priorities and polices.

Work with the Technical Support Specialist to coordinate logistics for facility use, including set-up, audio visual, custodial, and security services.

  • Act as a liaison for external clients renting campus spaces.
  • Ensure proper documentation, contracts, billing, and compliance requirements are met.
  • Resolve scheduling conflicts and ensure efficient space utilization.
  • Support major institutional events (e.g., commencement, new student orientation), in addition to all special events for the President (e.g., Juneteenth).
  • Recruit, train, and supervise student workers or event staff.
Administrative & Rentals
  • Contribute to the life and culture of the college and represent the Student Affairs Division by serving on committees as assigned, including governance committees, task forces, and participating in other professional development activities.

  • Contribute to the college’s long-term and strategic planning efforts, including accreditation, as needed.

  • Understand strategic initiatives and manage high-level communication to align daily operations with institutional goals.

  • Maintain records, reports, and usage data for events and facility rentals.

  • Manage budgets related to student activities, events, and facility use as applicable.

  • Effectively communicate with students in person and using multiple modalities, including technology, social media, etc.

  • Contribute to the overall success of the college by performing related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in Higher Education, Business Management, Hospitality, Communications, or related field from an accredited institution of higher education.

Five years experience in student affairs, event planning, or facilities coordination.

Excellent communication and customer service abilities, and strong organizational skills.

Valid New Mexico Driver’s License.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Masters degree in Higher Education, Business Management, Hospitality, Communications, or related field from an accredited institution of higher education.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and implementation of best practices in student activities, orientation, or student leadership.

  • Genuine interest and enthusiasm for working directly with students, and campus and community constituents.

  • Excellent managerial, advisory/supervisory, team-building, and communication skills.

  • Ability to handle multiple assignments concurrently, and desire to work in a high-traffic, fast-paced environment.

  • Experience related to Title IX and/or student conduct.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for interacting with students, staff, vendors, and external clients.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire.
  • Ability to plan, market, and promote innovative activities.
  • Knowledge of event planning processes, including logistics coordination, vendor management, and program evaluation.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and prioritize competing demands effectively.
  • Knowledge of best practices in student engagement and events planning within higher education.
  • Interpersonal and relationship-building skills among diverse stakeholders.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Requires night and weekend hours.
  • Must be willing to travel.
  • Successful completion of a defensive driving course is required within 60 days of employment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching during events and activities.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying up to 30 lbs.
  • Regular use of a computer and standard office equipment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This position operates in a fast-paced, highly interactive environment with regular interaction with students, staff, faculty, and external vendors. Work settings include office, indoor and outdoor campus spaces, and event venues.
