Job summary

KU Information Technology is seeking a Student IT Support Technician to assist end users on the KU Lawrence Campus. You’ll help with hardware/software installs, troubleshoot issues, and manage basic tickets, while supporting campus staff. A valid driver's license and ability to lift up to 50 pounds are required.

You must be available for at least 12 hours weekly during standard hours. Experience with Windows, Mac, or Linux is essential, along with strong communication and customer service

Student IT Support Technician
Position Overview

The Student IT Support Technician position is responsible for working as a part of a team to provide technical support for end users at the University of Kansas – Lawrence Campus.

Qualified candidates must be able to work a minimum of 12 hours per week during the Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM schedule. This position requires a valid driver's license and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without accommodation.

Job Description
  • 30% - Provide support to campus support staff when requested.
  • 20% - Install, upgrade, image, and configure computer hardware and software.
  • 20% - Troubleshoot hardware and software issues.
  • 10% - Maintain accurate hardware inventory.
  • 10% - Provide basic technical support via phone, email, chat, or in person.
  • 5% - Create and update support tickets in ticket management system.
  • 5% - Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Can work a minimum of 12 hours per week, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience using or managing Windows, Mac and/or Linux operating systems, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience troubleshooting computer hardware and software issues, as evidenced by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous professional experience supporting/troubleshooting computer hardware and software, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience using or managing Dell computer hardware, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience using or managing multi-function devices (print/fax/scan devices), as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience using a ticketing system (ServiceNow, Remedy, etc.), as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience using a configuration management solution (Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager), as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience supporting AV technology in a classroom or event environment, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Knowledge of LAN / WAN principles and protocols, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Experience creating technical documentation, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Availability to work over academic, holiday, and summer breaks, as evidenced by application materials.
  • Eligible for Federal Work Study.
Position Requirements

During the semester term of the appointment, the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions
  • Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.
  • This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds with or without accommodation.
