Job summary

The New York City Department of Education seeks a Suspension Hearing Officer, OSPP, to preside at and oversee student suspension hearings for students with disabilities or in general education programs. Reporting to the Supervising Attorney, the officer will conduct hearings, advise families, and issue findings of fact and decisions in a timely manner.

Qualifications

Admitted to NYS Bar.
One year of legal experience after admission to any state bar.
Six months of service as Agency Attorney Intern (30086) or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

Preside over student suspension hearings and related proceedings, including hearings with students with disabilities or in general education.
Conduct pre-hearing conferences at locations across NYC's five boroughs.
Advise students and parents on due process rights and hearing procedures.
Communicate suspension-related issues with parents/guardians.
Prepare findings of fact and recommend disciplinary measures, ensuring compliance with Chancellor’s Regulations A-443 and timelines.
Exercise independent judgment to render fair, impartial decisions for NYCPS.
